I bought that LG monitor last fall from Costco as my first foray into wide-screen. It was on sale for $350.
The ghosting in fps was really bad. Like, some of the worst I've ever experienced. I'd been on a 27" VA panel for ~5 years but buying the LG monitor actually got me to research wtf is up with VA vs IPS because I'd never seen ghosting or black smearing so bad.
Returned the LG.
I ended up purchasing BOTH this HP X34 monitor and the Gigabyte M34WQ. I had both in my house at the same time.
The panels were indistinguishable (it's generally accepted that the panels are the same) and performance was fantastic on both.
If the extra features of the Gigabyte aren't important to you (KVM, PiP, etc) then you absolutely cannot do better than the X34 in this price range
Rtings.com reviewed the Gigabyte M34WQ (at the ti I was in the market) for some reference on panel performance.

still their #1 pick for 34in monitors.

I have a 3 year old LG that has failed like many many others and I really don't want to go back to LG, but Costco warranty..... Also HP is only a 1 year warranty too.

I debated between the 2 also. I believe the LG is 300nits brightness which is too low for me for a VA panel. I have a VA now at 300 and it's not bright enough. This Hp is 400nits and ips. If you can get the edu discount and the 20$ off the newsletter sign up I think the Hp is the winner
It actually states that the LG is 400nits

Thanks for that clarification. I guess it just comes down to IPS vs VA and flat vs curved.
I use a lot of CAD programs so I prefer a flat screen so things aren't warped.
