Camp Chef > Traeger

However, please note this model does NOT have the wifi PID, just the regular digital PID. Deal breaker for me to upgrade my old PG24DLX.

I have the previous generation of this grill... the assembly is no big deal... mostly attaching the legs and handles... the main unit is already pre-assembled...

Love my Camp Chef ZG with this front shelf that I added to mine after I bought the smoker. It was a great addition. No need for the wifi controller. I use a Bluetooth Inkbird thermometer and it works great.

I also added the Sidekick which is another worthwhile addition only available on the Camp Chefs.

i dont see the $429 price with free assembly, ($450 for me)
I see free assembly as an option.
I saw the rec-teq deal and i am drooling over that, but it is likely overkill and i like the side attachment options here and the ability to remove the heat shield to sear. Sounds like warranty is decent and parts are easy to find.....

My gas weber has lasted me about 10+ years, and so i am thinking pellet - i love smoking and the wood flavors versus gas. I know rec-teq is a lot nicer / better warranty- but is it really worth 3x the $$ ??

Camp Chef > Z Grills.... that is the general consensus online. I own a Grilla so can't speak to this specifically.
I went with Grilla over all the others as well. I need WiFi. With that being said, my buddy has this Camp Chef and loves it.

Buy it. Try it a few times and if you don't like it and think the 3x price is worth it, sell this one and get the other. Around here used units sell for close to full price.

Silly ? - I have smoked for a long time using a cheap wireless meat probe. I recently purchased a Camp Chef to try pellet grilling and friends are saying I need a wifi controller.

My pellet grill noob question is why? The digital controller will hold the temp I set it too so it seems like a waste of money. What am I missing?
If you're doing a long overnight smoke waking up to look at your phone is easier than getting out of bed to check on the smoker. Temps are usually pretty steady but flare ups and shutdowns can happen. I have the non wifi version similar to this one and it's fine. I just purchased an inkbird wireless with 4 probes for less than an upgrade to the WiFi version so I can monitor temps more easily. I don't plan on using it overnight or when I'm not home so the wifi controller would be overkill for me.

Wasn't a joke, trying to find if my portable power supply has enough juice for a camping trip.
I asssumed...I was just being goofy, sorry if it didn't fly.

This smoker is pretty big (144.7 Pounds) for camping, you might want to consider a more tradional non electric start portable smoker.

Cannot recommend this grill enough. Bought at $400 from Dicks a little over a year ago. Have had zero issues. Little maintenance needed and I'm making the best bbq ever.

My old pit boss used to throw me into fits of rage every smoke. Can't believe I tolerated it for so long.

Great deal, I think Camp Chef is the best value in the under $800 price range. I really like mine. It's reliable, support is supposed to be good (I've not needed it), it's well built, it has tons of useful add-ons you can buy. I'll buy Camp Chef over Traeger any day.

$429 is a really good deal for a quality smoker with a PID controller and shelf accessory. The free assembly is cake on top. Yeah, it's not complicated, but it's a little difficult for one person because the barrel is really heavy to manipulate while you assemble. Took me about one hour. It's nice to have someone do it for you.

If you're shopping for a grill, I don't know everything, but I can say Pit Boss is okay if you get it real cheap on sale, Camp Chef is the best value in this price range, Grilla/RecTec/Yoder are the ones I'd buy if I wanted to spend $800-2000. But if it's me, I'd take a look at the Masterbilt charcoal gravity smokers. Real charcoal smoking (more smoke flavor) with the convenience of a pellet grill. The brand hasn't always been reliable but I've heard the newer models are pretty well built.

Best price it's ever been? Nope. I have this smoker (it's amazing btw) and paid $399 for it from a local sporting goods store about a year ago. While I didn't get "free assembly", you don't need it. It comes mostly assembled and it has it up n running in about 15-20 mins after attaching legs, side table, handles etc.

I've had previous model of camp chef for four years. The only issue I ran into is using a foil to cover the indirect metal cover but covering the side to not allow the smoke to go around the metal sheet. This caused smoke to come out of the pellet box, thought something would go on fire. Now I make sure to foil it up but allow air gaps on the side. Other than that issue which I will blame me for misuse, I've cooked many thanksgiving turkeys, ribs, briskets, and chicken on this thing. I feel it still has many years of use.

This is only for hot smoking, it does not do cold smoking, right?
