Just curious what you guys look for when shopping around for luggage. There are so many different brands and models and their price points are all over the place. I know Samsonite is one of the major brands but what is it that makes them stand out?
This is very tempting even though I paid only $30 more for the set of 3 (Winfield 2).
Okay, after looking at reviews...looks like quality has gone way downhill.
i was able to order when it went out of stock and item is going to ship. Warranty clearly states damage at the airport caused by airline baggage handlers is not going to be covered.
So am I better off getting soft side for checked in luggage in terms of durability?
Choosing between this set and the American Tourister Moonlight Hardside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Anthracite, 3-Piece Set which is obn backorder but I was also able to order.

You can't go wrong with good quality soft side luggage.
I don't see any compelling reason for hard side luggage and I have tried both.
Soft-side luggage has a few advantages: 1. Does not break. Good brands never rip. Damage is usually not catastrophic.
2. Smaller footprint when packing/unpacking: box with lid design can lean against a wall.
Hard-side luggage negatives: 1. Can crack/break if not handled properly. Can be catastrophic.
2. Clam-shell design. Two halves need to be fully spread out while packing/unpacking. Requires too much space to fully open and spread out.
Unfortunately, good deals on soft side luggage is hard to find these days.
Target has SwissGear soft side on sale that you can search for.
They look good but not sure about durability.

Thanks for the detailed response! Yeah seen those pros/cons that you pointed out. I did get one of those Swiss gear soft side from Target. Waiting for it to get delivered, now i'm choosing which hard side order to cancel, then choose from the soft vs hard when I have them side by side.
One thing I do which a lot of people probably don't do is to make sure the luggage is "fully packed". A half empty hard shell is more likely to break than a full one. I use bubble pack and empty 2-liter soda bottles to fill the voids. The bottles take a lot of volume but not weight which is important with a 50 lbs limit specially with Large luggage.

I had to go back and look at my orders. The Winfield 2 I ordered was a gift for someone. It's been 5 years and I haven't heard of anything going wrong, but I also don't know how much travel has been with airlines.
For myself, I bought the Omni -- it had the best reviews at the time along with one other line (can't remember). Anyway, it's not hard like I expected...but it's taken some tossing and no issues after multiple cruises, flights, and road trips. The set is only 3 years old and the handle has lasted better than my American Tourister that snapped, and managed to get a small hole on the outside.

Bad reviews.
Questionable quality?
