When my daughter was an infant, I used mine to play lullaby playlists remotely, set routines to turn on/off lights based on time of day, etc. Smart devices will always be useful, provided the user knows how to actually use the product

2nd gen - tinny sound and low volume
3rd gen - good sound, much louder, and better microphones
4th gen - sound same as 3rd gen, microphones poorer than 3rd gen, and poorer form factor (admittedly subjective)
3rd gen is definitely the sweet.spot choice in Echo Dots.
