If it hasn't been pointed out already...
There is another use that one can benefit from, in that the audio out can be used to output through soundsystems not equipped with either smart assistant or streaming audio. Works well for that purpose. Otherwise, I agree that 3rd gens are far superior for standalone sound.

Anyone else think a used 2nd gen Amazon dot should and would not be originally valued at 49.99? It just makes the deal look extremely inflated from what it actually is.

Three years ago they had to practically give the 3rd gen away (got mine through a baby registry promo for 5'ish), what happened? They are still pointless. I ask Alexa for the weather because I'm literally too lazy to just pick up my phone unless I ask her and then don't pay attention to her monotone, which happens fairly often.

Okay I will admit, her ability to make calls and establish coms from app to home is interesting, but I doubt many besides me use that.
These voice assistants are not useless, if you feel that way, you just aren't creative enough to put them to good use. Big difference.

When my daughter was an infant, I used mine to play lullaby playlists remotely, set routines to turn on/off lights based on time of day, etc. Smart devices will always be useful, provided the user knows how to actually use the product

I agree the speaker on the 2nd gens are bad but the mic pickup is excellent. I can practically whisper from across the room and Alexa will understand me, even with background noise.
Quote from inttwoeight :
2nd generation always reacts fastest to voice commands for me, I don't use them to listen to music, so sound quality isn't essential. A good deal for me.
I agree— 3rd gen + are all slow as molasses and I have to yell at them like an abusive father to get them to listen. Kids these days…

You'd think these things would be geniuses by now, or we'd at least be subjugated enough at this point to not have to say things 5 different ways in order to get her to do something for us. Feels like an old Sierra game. I was just yelling at her a few hours ago because she couldn't understand that I wanted a different artist for the song that she was playing.

"You haven't ordered fertilizer in a while…would you like to…"
"Shut the F@$K up, Alexa!"

I swear I'm getting closer to tossing all 3 of mine out the house if this keeps up.

This is the worst echo product next to the echo auto. It's only use is for trading in when Amazon runs an upgrade promotion.

Totally worth it if only for the 25% discount on a new device with trade-in… personally I think the second GEN is awesome when you hook it up to 3.5 mm cable or Bluetooth speakers.

Kind of funny that used condition and used very good condition are the same price

I also agree that the 2nd Gen Dot has the best mic, often my 3rd Gen didn't pick up my command while the 2nd Gen in a different room reacted.

Works great for outside. Yes, yes 3rd gen is way better, we should all know. Outside speaker is best for this at 11 bucks
