While this may not be the best speaker (based on above comments) couldn't you use it for the future trade in value? If you trade in an old Echo device, you get 25% off the purchase of the new Echo device. For example, the Echo Show 10 is $250, but getting 25% off of that is $62.50 off. Pretty good return for a $10 dot! Smilie

Get 3rd gen minimum folks. Unless you prefer a very tinny speaker by comparison. Only plus with the older gen is the MicroUSB instead of a barrel plug but honestly even at $5 these would not be worth it right now today.

These voice assistants are not useless, if you feel that way, you just aren't creative enough to put them to good use. Big difference.

When my daughter was an infant, I used mine to play lullaby playlists remotely, set routines to turn on/off lights based on time of day, etc. Smart devices will always be useful, provided the user knows how to actually use the product

I use one these to turn a 20 year old stereo into a 5 year old smart stereo. Wouldn't bother with the built in speaker.

yeah but like... a phone you will trash anyways works better in a couple different ways, with the one downside being eventual battery failure.

I agree. I have 2 of these and the speaker and volume on the spherical dot blows these out of the water. Still not super great.
Biggest downside to these echo dots is they will not be supported much longer. I think it's this year they stop supporting them.

I agree the speaker on the 2nd gens are bad but the mic pickup is excellent. I can practically whisper from across the room and Alexa will understand me, even with background noise.

2nd generation always reacts fastest to voice commands for me, I don't use them to listen to music, so sound quality isn't essential. A good deal for me.

100% true ... I use a Gen 2 only for receiving voice commands and to play through the 3.5mm audio output into my AVR.

I've had... Dots: Gen 1, 2, 3 & Echo Gen 1, 2, 3, 4
The Best mics for ability to pickup in a loud environment seems to be Dot Gen 2 and Echo Gen 4.
