The BETTER 14in one is actually cheaper than the 15in so that is what I was emphasizing here!
So if you want to go even cheaper (but still have all the great above base features), try this customizable page:
https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp...-4z1x4av-1
The base with i3-1215u with 6 cores, 8 thread is actually as fast as the older i5 11th gen u cpu. so you can get that for $451 or $420 edu discount and save but still getting all the above features in this great chassic!

the 14in has usb-c with Displayport and power delivery as well as HDMI 2.1 and also two sodimm slots and backlit keyboard.
15in does not have usb-c with displayport or power delivery and hdmi 1.4 only. also the igpu in the i7 fo the 15in is only slightly faster than i5 with the cpu only being slightly faster in single core and not much faster in multicore because it's likely throttled anyway.
So all in all, the 14in is a much better deal imo. that i5 12th gen cpu is about equal in multicore to 5500u ryzen cpu.

Unknown is what upgrade options does this have for M.2?

This 15in is so grossly overpriced for its lack of features that i am really scratching my head on why HP prices it like this?!? They must be counting on people to only look at "i7-1255u"?
as for the ssd, it's a single nvme m2 slot

Yeah, I was scratching my head a bit when I saw the pricing too, as the 14-inch seems to be on a more premium/modern/upscale platform but is priced lower.
I would recommend the 14-inch model over the 15-inch model for the reasons you have been stating: better port selection/features (USB charging and HDMI 2.1), better audio, and lower price.
The 15-inch may appeal to folks who want a bit more CPU power and particularly GPU power (as well as a larger screen size).

If you really want a 15in laptop with more cpu power than i5-12th, i would actually recommend this due to the ryzen being more power efficient and therefore less throttling:
https://www.costco.com/hp-pavilio...58348
People are more likely to pay higher price for a smaller more premium laptop. HP completely got it backward on this one!
