I bought this for work and I have had to go in twice to replace the ratchet. The directional selector gets stuck and ends up popping out. Probably ok for lite use at home. Or if you don't mind going into Ace to have it replaced.

Total crap though. I wouldn't waste my time or money on that set.

I buy a couple of these every time they go on sale. They are gr8 for gifts and for replacing lost or damaged sockets in bigger tool boxes. The ratchets are decent, but they don't last. And good luck finding replacements for warranty. My local Lowes haven't had any in stock for the last dozen or so times I've went in.

My local lowes refuses to warranty any Craftsman tools unless you have a receipt and same goes for Kobalt because they could care less. At least the 3 lowes near me.
All my lifetime warranty tools I take a picture of the receipt and uploaded it to my computer.

I did that because I heard Harbor Freight won't replace lifetime warranty ratchets without a receipt, and even the original receipts start to fade after 6-12 months. Somebody in front of me in line didn't have his receipt, and didn't speak English very well, but they let him exchange it anyways.

The direction mechanism on my Craftsman 1/4" ratchet kept getting stuck, and it pained me to swap my made in USA ratchet for a made in China one. But what can you do.

I'm interested to seeing the reviews of Craftsman going forward with Sears Craftsman vs. Lowes and Ace Craftsman.

P.S. I've used a Harbor Freight adjustable length ratchet for years. It's my favorite ratchet. I used it a lot for a non-pro. I think the length locked up on me after 7-8 years and I got an exchange. But it's a great ratchet.

The set in this deal would be one that I'd keep in the car. I have a 1/4" ratchet with a 10mm socket that pretty much takes care of everything on everything you can adjust quickly on a Honda. So if you don't have one I'd recommend getting some kinda set. It comes in handy. I have a "tough built" set with other sizes too, but that set is absolute crap.

I hate how some sets don't list what size sockets it comes with. That's important.

anyone know what sizes come in the metric set? I lost my 10mm socket and need a replacement
Haven't we all? There should be a lost 10mm support club.

If you only need to use a ratchet set a handful of times a year, then the HF set is for you. I would classify that as "light work" use. If you need a more dependable ratchet set, I wouldn't get either of these.
I've had this same ratchet for probably 15 years and use it all the time. It's bullet proof.

It does not matter once you are under the car and if you're looking for "a" wrench. :-)

I'd rather buy the Harbor Freight one for 6 bucks that has 2x more sockets.
I bought a $6 set at Harbor Freight thinking I got a deal, something to just throw in my car. It's terrible. Craftsman is a muuuch better brand than Harbor Freight.

I have this set and it's crap. I rather take my money and chance the Craftsman set.
This HF ratchet skips, has like 36 teeth and, as another user noted, sockets don't stay on the adapter for a 10mm. I'll probably pick up the Craftsman and put this in my trunk.

You need a breaker bar and torque wrench if you want to do it right. Breaker bar or tire iron at a minimum.

Can't rebuild the ratchet? I have a USA made Craftsman ratchet set and I would try to fix first before trade. Or even sell it on eBay.

They had these same sets around holidays. I picked up each of the metric sets and they're surprisingly nice. I'd watch out for a couple things though. My ace had the black and grey cased older Chinese made sets mixed in. I wouldn't buy those. The red cased ones are made in Taiwan and much higher quality. Also, my store had a mixture of 2 different almost identical red cases with the only difference being the hinge. Certain ones had the metal pin type hinge you can remove with pin punch and use bottom of tray with no lid in drawer or toolbox as organizer. Just FYI on that if you like to store tools that way.

Forgot about that set. Thanks!

That maybe true but for something used very little such as for stocking a second home it works. And if its stolen no loss.

Broke a wrench and HF replaced. No receipt was required.

I definitely understand if it's used sparingly but imagine needing it to work and it breaks on you. Now you have to waste your time having to go replace it. The ratchet in that set is so poorly made and fails often. I know because I've own that crappy set. I thought the same as having it as a back up set in the car. Never again.

What is "light" work for a ratchet set? Are nuts and bolts in cars torqued looser when the car is "at home"?

Are you a professional mechanic? If you're not then it doesn't seem like this set would be good for "light work" "at home" since you had to replace it twice... and if you are a pro why would you buy a $10 ratchet set? Just curious.
There are lots of things that have bolts that aren't cars.

I believe the "light use at home" he's referring to is stuff like taking the service panels off a washing machine, tightening the legs on a chair/table, etc....you know, things that aren't torqued down to 120 ft-lbs like rusted auto parts.

If the ratchet fails while you're snugging down a bolt on your dishwasher, that's just inconvenient. If the ratchet fails while you're reefing like hell on your little 1/4" 10mm socket on an alternator bracket, your delicate hand meat and knuckles are flying into something sharp, hard or both.

I know it's not a real repair job until you've drew blood and screamed out expletives, but there really is such a thing as "the right tool for the job."
