I think if you want to use it as a smart device then yes I believe so. I have this door lock and I do have a couple complaints about it to the point where I wouldn't purchase it again. If you want to just use it as a number lock, you could without the nest connect I assume but that kind of defeats the purpose of owning one of these.

1) The side that has the numbers on it, the trim has faded and looks discolored.
2) It will randomly lose connection to the wifi even though I have an access point 6 feet away from the nest connect / door lock.

The positives are that when it is connected, it works fine and it's also nice to be able to program a schedule for certain visitors / family to be able to come and go as they please by giving them their own unique key.

However, like I said above, I'd rather just go with a dumb number lock next time as I really don't use the front door as much as I do my garage.

For me, I never had an issue with wifi connection. Only thing that happened to me so far after 3 month is i have to make the existing lock hole bigger for the auto-lock extend all the way, probably due to thermal expansion

Another small annoying thing is the adjustable bracket...there are only two positions for the bolt to be flushed with the door; so for door with exisitng deadbolt hole, the bolt is not flushed. Probably existing door is not cut to the standard...

I have several of these. My only complaint is a lock on an exterior door in a location that isn't heated/AC chews through batteries. I'm sure that would be the case on most of these. But just know if you are using this on a service door to a garage or something you may be changing batteries often. The ones I have that are in the house are all fine.
