Good deal to get into milwaukee system?

Also, thoughts on this vs makita deal? Can't go wrong with either I supposed?

Yes, these are still hackable. Place battery in cart, select store pickup. Place combo kit in cart with store pickup from different store. Finalize order. Pick up the kit, and then don't pick up the battery. Used to be able to ship the desired one to home and store pickup the other item then not pick the other, but unable to check out now days due to error of not having same same option (both store pick up or both home delivery).

This or DeWalt? Everything I've read said that they're both great, going into company histories and that stuff, but anyone have any real world comparison? Like maybe batteries for one brand tend to go on sale more or something?

Personally I jumped on the Milwaukee wagon (and very much enjoy it). The swaying factor for me was the yard tools that use the same 18v batteries. The quicklok string trimmer and attachments and the chainsaw have been great.

If i were starting out on a budget I'd go yellow cause I believe they're best bang for buck. But if you want the best then go red. The Fuel platform is a brute & workhorse. Also something to consider if you're on a job site with coworkers is to all have same brand so you can borrow a battery or something like that. Good luck 👍

does the battery automatically cancel and refund on its own if not pickup?

This is tempting to grab for the hammer drill. I already have an impact driver but its the non-Fuel version. Although, the last time i needed and borrowed a hammer drill was for installing an anti-tip device for an oven... I don't have any similar needs right now as far as drilling into concrete or masonry.

Word of advice, hammer drills are heavier and generally inadequate versus an SDS rotary hammer. Buy a lightweight regular drill and an SDS and you'll be better off.

I have and use these tools. 2804 hammer drill is a very strong and compact drill, but not the greatest hammer function. Dewalt 996 is probably on par with it. Dewalt 998 or 999 consistently does better in reviews, but I never used either. All are outclassed by even the cheapest of corded sds drive rotary hammer drills so I don't care much about th ehammer function. I won;t use it beyond a few tapcons. For a bunch I get out the corded rotary hammer. The 2853 impact driver is a complete animal if need be. Great tool, might be best in it's class. Great control on stopping the screws. Very compact head. Only real downside for me is the driver is a little loud. Outside work is no consequence. Inside is loud. If I were buying today, I'd also look closely at the Makita deal for $240ish. That hammer drill is a couple years newer design and the review say the impact is silky smooth. Never used either makita though.

I used the Milwaukee hammer drill (it was my father-in-laws, not mine) for a while, but preferred my Ridgid Octane hammer drill. The Milwaukee is a lot smaller (which to me is not necessarily a good thing when it comes to drills with a lot of torque) and powerful for it's size, but the Ridgid is simply a beast. It's got more torque. I even bought a second one a few months ago so I'd have one if my other one ever breaks, lol. Still, nothing wrong with the Milwaukee. Seems like a "decent" deal for this combo, but still a little high priced, IMO, but that's Milwaukee for you!

I own a few from each brand and I do prefer Milwaukee, but not by a whole lot. Dewalt offers better value for most diyers imo and better chance of scoring in-store clearance deals, and the batteries typically run cheaper. Speaking of batteries, my only real complaint about Milwaukee (besides the price) is the inconsistent battery fitment; on most of my m18 tools there is a varying degree of slop, while on a few of the m12 tools it's so tight that it makes it difficult to remove the battery. Bottom line this is a good deal on top quality tools and if you've decided on Milwaukee this is a great entry point.

I wish these kits would come with Packout boxes. I'd sell my old stuff and buy new. A nicer case plus fresh 5 year warranty and new batteries seems like a win win.

Very questionable decision by Milwaukee to continue with the old cases. Maybe it's cost related - either materials in the Packout plastic mold are higher grade than the older cases, or a different factory makes the Packout cases with higher labor costs, or the known defect rate / warranty rate on the legacy cases just makes it easier for the CFO to predict profits.

The problem is not everyone uses packouts. A normal molded case is pretty compact and lightweight compared to a packout equivalent. You'd deter a good portion of buyers who don't need packouts away from it as well as take up more shelf space in retail.
