Most of these are 8th gen intel processors, which is relatively old. These are business class laptops with Win 10 Pro. 7xxx series are compact and solid construction. If the features hit the mark, it's a good buy. Also note that some of these laptops do not come with webcams so make sure to double check the configs before purchasing.

I don't think this is a good deal, but the Gateway being "better in every way" is false.
This is one of the most well-built business laptops and comes with a keyboard and display that the Gateway laptops don't even come close to.

The 60% off coupon that lowered 7390s with 4-core i5 and 1080p screen to $300 was good. This is kind of mediocre though, $380 for 4-core and 1080p screen. Can probably find something better on ebay.

for the same price, gateway laptop is way better in every way.

These are business class laptops, really nice and robust, but anything gen 8 and older CPU is obsolete - no Win11 support. Win 11 is actually working very very nice, I was pleasantly surprised.
Also, this model tend to have expanding battery, which eventually breaks the motherboard - at least that my statistical experience with batches from 2-3 years ago. My org deploys tens of thousands of these Dells. I still have one of these corporate 7490 laying around. Dell warranty decided to replace the entire internals damaged by battery instead of simply replacing with new laptop - still don't comprehend the financial logic of that. I can purchase cheap decommissioned laptops like this for personal use, but decided not to throw money - at it.
8 gen CPUS feel slower than 11th gen. The latest generation of Latitudes are much much better, i.e. the 10-11th gen CPUs, but we are yet to see them appear on sale as "refurbished" for ~$300.

Maybe it is an OK buy at around $300 for 16GB RAM models, definitely not worth more than $400 in my opinion. But for personal benchmark my favorite deal so far was the $599 HP Envy 13.3" at Costco couple months ago. Works and feels great.

I wouldn't opt for anything older than Gen10 (and really, you want Gen 11 or newer), and that would have to be a lower price. Don't really need the I7 for personal use; i5 is good enough.

If I add some accessories to make this above $550 so its $600+ including tax, would this qualify for AMEX $120 off $590 offer?

Thank you in advance for your response!

Roblox runs fine, but it's not super smooth, it's probably like 40 fps. I'm not buying this for my 10 year old, I'm shooting for an 11th gen Intel (with Iris Xe) which runs Roblox much better.

Amex deal doesn't work on any Dell outlet store including this one.

Bad experience with these-
I had one of these for work that had the 4 core 8 thread i5 (8350?) It was great in performance and form factor, but the motherboard died and got replaced three times before aging out of the two year warranty. It was always the same tantalum capacitor that blew after months of use. I think it was a poor design as I never dropped, spilled, or otherwise abused it. Perhaps it is related to the battery bulging issue or overcurrent in the dc power supply. I've put similar thinkpad ultraportables under much worse stress and have never had issues like that 7490.

Do you recall if that was the 7290s or 7390s as well? I assume there is some crossover in the platform.

Picked up a 7th gen i5 based Thinkpad T470 with dual batteries (both working well) for about $270 last month during the Memorial sale. I thought I was paying a bit too much for that. No complaints but thought it was a good money. And here I see these Dell 7490 for $300+. Stay away from these Dell laptops. These are known to have battery bulging in some models. The eBay vendor from whom I bought stopped selling these Dell models due to the headache it caused post-sale.

It was 7470, i7 with 8GB RAM. I asked IT to upgrade the RAM to 16GB and SSD to 500TB, because it was overheating with limited RAM trying to run backup, security and encryption along with regular work load. Eventually the battery swelled, and I've got the upgrade and motherboard replacement. That was like 4 years ago. This 7490 has the updated chassis with USB C. Not sure if the same problematic batteries though.
