My son's team made it to Everest base camp with this, and the bonus is the Danish team showed up at 2am and when their headlamps hit the shark, half of them crapped their pants and had to turn back. I heard they never summited.

I think it almost certainly could. There are tents that need to be staked and/or tied down for stability, but those tend to be ultralight backpacking tents or other higher-end, low-weight setups. I would be shocked if any tent with a smiley face on it is not freestanding.
