I sent this back: the app requires access to you location, contacts, photos, documents before you and even turn it on!

I know the post says otherwise, but the reviews on Amazon and the app store suggest my experience remains true.

Super shady, not worth the pretty pictures.

I got this during an earlier deal but ended up returning it after few days. Even the dimmest setting was too bright and effects were kind of meh.

The app definitely requires a ton of permissions including call log for some reason along with file system and storage. This app seems to be designed solely for harvesting as much data as possible because I could never actually get it to connect to the projector over Bluetooth. If you do get one of these, which I don't recommend, absolutely do not install the app. You can change the settings physically on the projector and nothing is worth all the data the try to harvest. It's nothing but spyware.

Bought this for our infant son earlier this year at twice the price. He loves staring at his "nebula" before he goes to sleep. I tried two other knock-offs that were cheaper and I think this produces the best overall effect. Pro tip, we power with a small 10k mah USB power bank and it runs for a good 8-10 hrs on one charge.

Cool

I'd just plug it into a USB power adapter, instead of putting daily mileage on a power bank (which means that battery will die much sooner).

Picked up two as the RGB LED strips around my screened porch are beginning to fail... this looks like a much easier install. Thanks!

Hmm... OP says the app doesn't require any phone permissions but, several reviewers complain that the app would not connect to the device without granting extensive permissions.

I'm pretty sure today's android requires location access to connect to nearby devices. If the app is saving anything it also needs access to storage/documents.
Can't speak for contact access if it's asking for it.

Fakespot seems confirms your suspicion, as about 30% of the reviews appear to be fake. The fakespot adjusted rating is 3/5.

I think I'm passing on this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipmarUC48gI <- high quality review comparing this to the competition.

This is way cheaper than the competition based on this guys video and this is about 1/3rd the cost. I still think this is gimmicky crap as a product and way overpriced but I suppose if you want this its hard to beat this price.

Regarding permissions:

Any app that uses Bluetooth to connect or communicate with an Android phone is going to need location permissions to work. Period.

The operating system requires it. So, it's not the app trying to do anything shady. It's the way Bluetooth (possibly WiFi too) works on Android.

I have not studied Bluetooth closely enough to know either way, but it may be that's baked in to Bluetooth for all operating systems and products using it.

Access to media would be necessary for the app to store data such as pairing info or when you customize the visual patterns using the app. Contact permission is another Android thing but I don't remember why it's a requirement.

So take off the tinfoil hats and chill. If your are important enough that someone would have a reason to write apps and poke around in it, put that thing in a Faraday cage and disconnect from the internet.

Otherwise, consider talking to someone about paranoia and how it can destroy someone's life and personal relationships.

Much ado about nothing.
