I know the post says otherwise, but the reviews on Amazon and the app store suggest my experience remains true.
Super shady, not worth the pretty pictures.

I'd just plug it into a USB power adapter, instead of putting daily mileage on a power bank (which means that battery will die much sooner).

Can't speak for contact access if it's asking for it.

This is way cheaper than the competition based on this guys video and this is about 1/3rd the cost. I still think this is gimmicky crap as a product and way overpriced but I suppose if you want this its hard to beat this price.

Any app that uses Bluetooth to connect or communicate with an Android phone is going to need location permissions to work. Period.
The operating system requires it. So, it's not the app trying to do anything shady. It's the way Bluetooth (possibly WiFi too) works on Android.
I have not studied Bluetooth closely enough to know either way, but it may be that's baked in to Bluetooth for all operating systems and products using it.
Access to media would be necessary for the app to store data such as pairing info or when you customize the visual patterns using the app. Contact permission is another Android thing but I don't remember why it's a requirement.
So take off the tinfoil hats and chill. If your are important enough that someone would have a reason to write apps and poke around in it, put that thing in a Faraday cage and disconnect from the internet.
Otherwise, consider talking to someone about paranoia and how it can destroy someone's life and personal relationships.
Much ado about nothing.
