So far the M2 has only been announced in the Air and entry-level MacBook Pro, so I expect this to get that upgrade this Fall

Excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between this and an iMac? Is it just the I have to use my own monitor v.s. the iMac built in monitor? Thanks for the help.

Correct.
Form factor wise.
Imac is all in one, computer+monitor.
Mac mini is just the mini box, computer only.

Not a great deal, this has been going for $499 in the recent past and even for $449 once for military and veterans. I think if you're not in a hurry it's possible that there will be better sales soon.

I don't know for sure, but I know they recently announced the M2. So this will likely be updated sooner then later. So I don't think a $100 savings is worth it for an PC that's 2 years old now.

The mini has a slightly more powerful GPU than the base model imac as well.

You can't compare shady ebay "refurbs" with brand new from an authorized reseller. shake head

The M2 carries a $200 price increase as seen in the macbook air, you won't be getting a M2 for near this price anytime soon.

The military exchange had it for $499 without tax. If they had it at that price again, I would buy another. They are currently $599 with 0% financing. While I feel the 256GB SSD is too small, that was easy to fix with an external SSD, and is working well for me. The 8GB of ram has not been an issue in the least.

I grabbed one of these "Used, Like New" from Amazon Warehouse for $473 a few months ago. It was brand new, only the box corner was damaged and cellophane torn (but still in place), so it was probably a drop casualty in an Amazon warehouse.

Great little machine for the price. Good performance, completely quiet.

Keep in mind that when you add in the cost of a monitor, keyboard, and mouse the price can get much higher very quickly, especially if you buy Apple branded stuff.

Fortunately I already had monitor, keyboard, and mouse so this was pretty plug-n-play.

Yes, the M2 will perform better once it gets to the Mini, but for most people, this M1 Mini will be more than sufficient.

user of M1 MBA here.
I assume M1 mini would perform quite similar to MBA, despite one is 8 core and one is 7.
even the 7-core MBA is beyond most daily use scenario. i do regular office work, some statistical modeling, python and stuff on it hooking to a 4k monitor and i don't feel it bottlenecks many stuff.
I am even thinking getting M1 Mini since i dont' have to deal with the connector hassles (only 2 TB on MBA and one has to being used as power connector). And also Mini should have no problem with having 2 external monitors, while MBA/MBP can only do one.
and for now TBH i'll wait probably to around 400 level (quite impossible....) after they mass produced M2.

16GB is hardly needed for any M1 chip nowadays.

Depending on what you want to do, this computer will outperform other ones in a similar price range. Base m1 vs m2 was improved, but not by a lot. If you want pure power one has to go for m1 pro or max
