I have Hypertough. Wish i didn't buy this brand. Its as worse as Chinese no name crap. Don't cheap out on home tools. Spend a little and settle for a decade or so.
This is a light use, specialty kit for 95% of users. Other than the tape measure and 6-in-1 screwdriver, no tool in this kit will likely going to see 2 or 3 uses for most of the target market. It won't last a decade with that use level but a lifetime.
LOL...I love how people complain about tools that average out to $1.40 each.

Not a bad deal for student going away to college. Need a bag however to hold the stuff.
I gave my son and daughter a bagged set of tools when they went off to college. They are renters now, and they both still use their set of tools many years after graduation!

They may have a $1.40 price but the value you get is about $0.50 per tool. At $5 it is well overpriced. It is not specialty kit it is a hodgepodge of cheap $1 or less tools that really are not going to be of that much use to a homeowner. You can get the same crap cheaper in a bargain bin, at harbor freight often free or at the dollar store. I'd estimate flea market value at $2, not a deal. I love how people like to spend money and not get any real value.

Nice move. Yeah back in the day when I went to college I never thought to pack any tools, and a tool set was one of things I ended up using often.
If the kid is handy and a DIYer, mom and dad should definitely buy them a much nicer set than this one, especially if they are going to be doing things like building a loft, shelves, etc.
But for the average student who typically does little to none of that, this set will work fine for basic tasks like hanging things on walls, tightening screws, emergency fixes for eyeglass frames or minor bike repairs, etc.

You're really going to hardcode thread crap a $10 tool set shipped to your door? LOL.
Yes, we all know this isn't a Dewalt or Klein set. Yes it is a cheap low-quality set. We get it.
But when you post thing like "At $5 it is well overpriced," we all know that what you're posting is complete BS.

I learned eventually that spending 1$ on unwanted crap is worse than spending 1000$ on worthy useful item. Its only my perspective. 10$ or 1.40$ might be something of no menial value for few people. But for most its a great amount on the longer run.

You'll never find anything similar in quality to the pliers at the dollar store and Harbor Freight will cost you $5 just for the hex keys, and anther $5 for the pliers and another $3-5 for the precision screw drivers. The 6-in-1 can be had for "free" at HF if you spend money and have a coupon.
If you think I am wrong, feel free to link to a few HF items that are similar and only $1.

I agree with you 100%. Do not buy its on deal. Buy it only if its worth it and going to be used by you. I know is against SDers moto. But my 2 cents. I made similar mistakes in the past. Don't do the same and waste money on useless junk.

That's what happened to me - my $10 tool box from Radioshack handles 90% of the stuff that I need to do for the past 10+ years. Mine has a ratchet and a bunch of sockets though and those are super handy and I'd add a decent ratchet set to this.

I agree for the most part, but don't assume you know what is of value to others, especially at any given time. Obviously to some here this set is not even worth $5. But perhaps to a student who needs to quickly fix their eyeglass frames minutes before a big final exam or risk failing, this set in hindsight may have been worth a $1k.

The trick is to spend the least, on the highest quality you need, on items you'll actually use.
Be it $1 or $100,000 I know people who live in million dollar houses they only use 3 rooms in, but can't afford to furnish and others who work professionally as tradesman but work twice as hard / long as they should because they skimped out on the tools they need to make money.
Don't pay for quality you'll never use and never skip on quality you cannot live without.
