Interesting, any laptop experts care to weigh in? I've never bought an AMD machine.

It's a weird config. Only 16GB will be in dual channel mode. Or has this changed in the newest chipset?

Ryzen's integrated GPU greatly benefits from dual channel RAM. So, even "only" 16GB in dual channel mode may provide 90% of the benefit under normal use. But yeah, it would be nice if someone with more knowledge could explain better.

Only 16GB will run in dual Channel till DDR4Ram. In DDR5, it is different and it does not even hurt the performance that much if you use a single stick. The reason is that each of the DDR4 module has 2 memory channel and it is basically based on LPDDR4/X. If you have a single stick of DDR5, the CPU will connect with it in 2x64 Bit. If you have 2 memory sticks, irrespective of their size, it will run in Quad Channel and that too, for the full capacity.

Say you have one 8Gb DDR5 soldered and one 32GB DDR5 module with a Ryzen 7 6800U. In that case, the 8GB ram will be itself running in 4GBx2 Dual Channel model and will be connected to 2x32bit channel. The other 32GB Ram will be running in 2x16GB Dual Channel mode and will be connected with the rest of the memory controller in 2x32 Bit, resulting Quad Channel configuration for the full capacity, even if the memory capacity is dissimilar between the two sticks.

I don't know... seems like an awful lot to be paying for an E-series. (The hierarchy goes E -> L -> T)

You can get the same laptop [lenovo.com] with 16gb of ram for $782 with the same coupon codes and "upgrade" (lose dual channel though) to 40gb yourself for the same price if you find yourself needing that much ram.

It is $825, not $782. Check again. JUNEBIGDEAL is not a fixed discount, it depends upon the base price. However, I still kind of agree to get that model you recommended.

Now regarding your idea about E -> L -> T, let me correct you on that. Build Quality and material wise, since 2020, E series has been redesigned by a lot to make it slimmer, lighter and metal has been used in the lid and top base. It is actually superior to L series which is made of plastic completely. The Advantage L series has towards business Customers is the offered specification related to security and business specific features. For example, L series can be configured with Intel V Pro and Ryzen Pro series CPUs which may be required by some business due to their integrated security options. It can be also fitted with LTE cards, not available in E series. But if you're buying for personal usage and don't require those, E series is actually a better choice due to build quality.

Ah, forgot I had student discount on, my apologies. It is indeed $825. That still leaves $170 for RAM upgrades though, so it is still a better deal.

Plastic isn't always inferior to aluminum, at least as the outer material for a laptop. Plastic flexes more than aluminum, which means chips & dents are less likely in collision. The plastic being generally very high quality on the L-series means it'll be strong enough to resist typical impact.
Plastic is typically only a cause for concern when it's used for hinges, and unfortunately E-series share the same plastic hinges as Lenovo's cheap IdeaPads. The most common issue E-series ThinkPads run into is the hinges failing in a few years. The L-series don't have such issue because it has metal hinges.

You are only getting 2x32-bit out of a single DDR5 DIMM, which would be inferior to true dual-channel using 2 or 4 sticks (128-bit total). There could be a slight advantage to single-channel (64-bit total) DDR5 using the independent "sub-channels" over single-channel DDR4 (also 64-bit), but the memory bandwidth is still half of what it could be if you have only one DDR5 stick by itself.

Note that Intel and AMD are referring to their DDR5 desktop CPUs as having dual-channel memory support, not quad-channel. That could be seen as marketing winning over engineering, but it's probably necessary because the DDR5 memory channel situation has been communicated so poorly.

A side note here on memory channels as a whole. In the desktop space, we're used to one memory module having memory for one 64-bit memory channel. That's true for DDR4, DDR3, DDR2 etc, but the DDR5 specifications move to 32-bit memory channels. So while each DDR5 module is still using 64-bits of bandwidth, there are technically two 32-bit memory channels worth of memory on each module. This can create a little bit of confusion, because it means that Intel 12th Gen, while still a 128-bit memory interface as previous generations, it uses 4x 32-bit channels, not 2x 64-bit. Undoubtedly companies (even Intel) still call this dual-channel, as a channel is usually inferred to be a 64-bit interface.

There is no easy solution here. 2DPC (two modules per channel) doesn't really mean much if technically channel there infers 64-bit but you're running on a 2x32-bit channel system. Some users are calling a DDR5 module a 'channel' with two 32-bit 'sub-channels', although that is more a twisting of reality, given that sub-channels are often something else in memory design. Because we've used the word 'module' to imply a 64-bit channel for so long, and because memory can be installed with more than one module per 64-bit channel, it's actually a mess in English to find not only the correct words but also ones simple enough to not make the situation overly complex. Perhaps it's time for some new words.
I have no interest in buying this laptop, but if I did buy something with soldered RAM and a single open slot, I would happily put 32 GB in there because you get a benefit and it's a relatively cheap upgrade with DDR4 at least. I would even do 4+32 GB (8 GB in dual-channel, 28 GB in single-channel).

The E series is still much inferior as you are missing the signature Thinkpad keyboard, ports, docking and security features on them. These are the reasons people willing to pay premium for a Thinkpad.

More importantly, the durability of E series is not on par with L and T. They still cut corners to bring the price down on many components. For example, they "melt" the metal threaded inserts into plastic casing for the hinge. You shouldn't expect these to last as long as other Thinkpads. The all plastic build on L is never a problem because L doesn't cheap out on important parts like E.

The recent improvements are mostly focused on the look and feel. The E is more of a "premium" feeling Lenovo laptop with a Thinkpad logo. Sure it might be better than Ideapads or even Thinkbooks but I'd say even an entry level Yoga would be a better choice if you find one with similar specs and price.
