Wow....I hope you all have a better experience than I have had! Their CS reps all give different info and I have now wasted 4 hours and been through 8 different reps trying to get my temporary number replaced with my ported number. The last "supervisor" said they have NO WAY to do it using the sim card and number assigned to it when I signed up and that I will now have to go to a corporate store to get a NEW sim card so they can cancel the temporary number and port my number to a new sim card. What a bunch of BS and waste of time. Had I known it was going to be this difficult to just start a new provider and port my old number over, I would have stayed with RP! Sadly I'm screwed since I paid with a ATT prepaid card and no way to get a refund. Hope you guys don't have this same problem with porting a number over after receiving your SIM and the new(temporary) number becoming active. I don't know who to believe anymore since one rep says one thing, the other say another and none of them have been able to fix it!
that is total BS

you don't need a new SIM

Do you currently have service on the new sim/new phone number?

Did you call the specific 1888 number found on google or just called 611?

Ya....I'd be very wary of this (see my previous post!) I have spent 5 hours off and on the phone with 9 different reps and the last "supervisor" at the porting center told me the ONLY way to port my old number over was to get a NEW sim card since the sim card they sent me got activated with a new number....so ya, be afraid! If there is a different way, I'd sure like to know. It's been a nightmare and I am still not finished with it getting ported.

This "may" only be an issue if you are trying to port from an ATT reseller (ie RedPocket or anyone that uses ATT service)
or… the
old number is not in the same market as the new number you activated
for example porting a Miami number onto NYC number will NOT work

ONLY options they give me now is that I have to go to a corp store to get a NEW sim card so they can terminate the temp number that activated when I put the sim in and turned on the phone....and activate my account with my ported number to a new sim card. Total PITA! They mentioned this is an issue with AT&T "resellers" so others may be fine if not coming from a reseller that uses AT&T towers (in my case Red Pocket) off to the ATT store to get a new sim. Had I known it would take the better part of my day and get me all pissed off....I would have just stayed with RP and saved the $$

So the moral of my story....if you are trying to port your old number from an ATT reseller that uses ATT towers and you are trying to port after you have already activated the sim....it's going to require you to go get a NEW sim to port the number. Frown
When you ordered the plan online did you ask to port your old number to ATT, or a new number? Wondering why ATT assigns a temporary number when SIM is activated rather than the number provided to port in while placing the order.

Same thing happened to me and was a ridiculous headache. They ended up charging me twice as well.

Spent all day on the phone with their absolutely horrid customer service. Of course I activated a week before this 16GB and they won't give it to me.

I hate att, but the service is decent.

Again, never ever ask to replace your number when you order the free sim online.

Ask for a new number that is in the same market as the number you will port.

After activating and paying for new number just call 1888 port activations to initiate port DONE

Is your area code for temp number and regular number from the same region?

If they're giving you that much hassle then you can port from RP to TMo/VZ network for few hrs or a day then port again to ATT Prepaid

If you have any Chase/BOA/USBank cards then look for $25 back on $25 Visible service promo so that basically ends up being free service -- otherwise someone else mentioned that there's a $10 TMo plan that you can port to (not sure how much total cost with sim)

Another option is buying a $1 Tracfone sim kit locally for VZ network (check BB/Target/Walmart websites for local stock) -- you can get $15 Tracfone smartphone plan email delivery from Target website

did you pay already? I have received the SIM but I am still undecided if I will go for it or not, I have not activated the sim yet so I was not charged a penny. if I decide not to switch, will the port in request I submitted with the order be cancelled and nothing will happen?

why not to ask to replace your number at checkout? I did that and received a sim that has my port number, but I did not insert it yet, I probably will not do the switch.

Because there have been issues with porting that way and numbers have been put in limbo.

Do you want that?

Exactly what I did! Ordered the SIM and "froze" my CC after the order in, did not ask for port but requested number in same area code as the number I planned to port. Sim received, popped into phone powered on, paid with Target prepaid $300 card...all seemed well....UNTIL I called in to request the port. Total nightmare! Went through no less than 9 reps and 4+ hours of back n forth on the phone with different depts. Also called direct to the "port center" via the 888 number. TONS of misinformation...transfers..."supervisors" and ZERO results. They called my old provider (RedPocket) with me on phone to verify and easily got my number "released". Then came more headaches telling me since I had the new(temp) number on my account and it was active, there was NO WAY they could cancel that and move/port my number to that same account/SIM (went through 4 diff reps at the end with the same answer) Told me that the only way was to go to a corp store to get a new SIM so they could port my old number to that and then cancel the temp number. I gave in at that point and went to the corp store for yet another nightmare. (employees were confused, younger, not very competent) Got new SIM, they called support/port center...supposedly got the number ported to the new SIM but now they had to cancel the old number and make a "new" account for the ported number and that the only way it could be "activated" was for the prepaid funds to be "moved" from old account. Of course the port center "can't" do that so xferred back to main line and waited 30 mins to get live person. Still an issue as now they simply can't move the $300 but that it has to be initially funded with the min amount $25 from a new payment source (WTF!?) I resisted...but with zero success I finally gave in and had then charge my CC for the $25 so the funds could be transferred over to the "new" account with the ported number. Then supposedly all was good to go and they hung up with support....only to find out only my data would work on the new SIM card (no calling/texts) Store asst manager messed around for another 20 mins and had to change things on my prepaid account and finally got the new sim to work with my service.
I have switched carriers 4 times in the past 5-10 years and NEVER had this kind of hassle. Had I paid with a CC and not the Target card...I would have said FU and gotten a refund and stuck with RedPocket (which 99% of the time the service has worked great)

So ya, I hope others have a better experience than mine. Wasted the most of a day with a lot of frustration trying to get everything working. Sooo not worth the effort but now I'm stuck with it for a year unless I just get pissed and sacrifice the 325 I have paid and port back out MadLMAO

So you called 1888 number AFTER spending hours dealing with regular 611 folks?

1888 is your ONLY spot to port

the issue you encountered:

Could it be that RP is the issue here?

I have had no issues porting from visible, tmobile, usmobile, verizon, etc

RP and others are MVNOs that make it very difficult to port out

RP was not the issue...I was on conf call when 888 called them to release my number. took 2 mins. ATT "port center specialists" via the 888 number were worthless! First woman that did the conf call assured me all was good, port successful and just power cycle my phone. Ya nope! Again....hopefully mine is isolated incompetence issue with ATT "specialists" I'd just say beware since it's a total crap shoot and all the ppl on ATT support/port center were giving me very mixed messages/conflicting info, yet they all said they would for sure take care of my issues. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Damn, this scares me. My sim arrives today and I order online with the port-in (old number) information. Do you recommend me just to cancel this order and re-order with a new temp number?

When I filled out my order for the sim, I elected to have my number be ported in, verified it was eligible (was coming from Visible), and filled in the required information to make sure that it happens. Got the sim card, popped it in and activated it. It activated the sim without a problem, but not my account (and didn't fund the $300 properly). Called the number from shown on the paper for the sim card mailing that said "having trouble porting your number? call 866-975-0050". Called them and my number was ported successfully within 5 minutes. No temporary number, no run around.

Since my plan wasn't funded, I bought the prepaid card from Target, added it, and service initiated just fine. I did find out later that my CC was charged $300, but it for whatever reason didn't show on the online system. Called customer service, and they reversed the charge without any hassle.

I know a lot of people here have horror stories, and I too had some problems, but my experience with customer service was pretty good in that they were able to address both of my problems within a few minutes.

Just keep in mind (especially on the internet), that people are much more likely to talk about a bad experience they had than they are to vocalize a good experience.

Thanks for clarifying, I received the sim but I decided not to go with this plan, if I never activate the sim, will my port in request be eventually canceled automatically?
