The usual spiel:

This is an upgrade for existing AM4 users.

Intel has 5-10% better performance for the same price (at the price of higher power consumption) for new builds

Only get the G version if you're absolutely sure you'll use Integrated Graphics

Otherwise buy the 5600 non-X version for $5 more. With the G version you only get 16 MB L3 Cache. The 5600 has 31 MB L3 cache. Ryzen is very memory bandwidth limited.
this plus that $85 mobo and you got yourself a nice cpu/mobo combo for under $300
Once you figure in the cost of an Intel motherboard, you're typically much cheaper with the AMD platform. When you figure that AMD supports their older chipsets with new CPUs, it becomes even more of a gap. Granted, I'm not eeking out each % of performance from my CPU, but I popped a modern Ryzen into my 370 motherboard with ease, and my board is almost 5yrs old at this point. Someday I'll replace it, but for now I just wanted a quick hit.

Where do you see the 5600X for $5 more, if you don't mind my asking? I recently went with a 5600G build since I wanted wanted to keep it a super budget build. Would gladly have taken the X for $5 more, but I haven't seen the X version for less than $200. (Edit: someone pointed out he says non-X...my bad)

Agreed on the Intel part, and would have went that route if it weren't for the slick $60 Gigabyte B450 Wifi mobo deal that Newegg had/has. Ended up being $225+ tax for the two, vs. another $50 or so had I gone Intel, due to a pricier mobo.

The motherboard prices are about the same for non Z boards. The socket longevity won't matter until next gen AMD as this is the end of AM4.

I thought about doing the same, but it'd be a big gamble. Fair chance they're closely monitoring and controlling inventory/production on these so as to not have to liquidate once the new gen is on shelves. $165 is already pretty 'bargain priced' for this chip IMO.

If they did end up with liquidation prices (assuming this price isn't already), I would imagine they'd go pretty quick and you might miss out.

Thanks for the opinion! I am just making a build for my parents running Ubuntu, so I don't need a cutting edge chip, but I want to future proof the system as much as possible. I think I am going to wait for a deal on the 5700G. I am not going to be running a graphics card, so I would like to get as much graphical processing power as possible out of the chip.

5700G is only going to be faster for things that use more than 12 threads. Be honest about what your parents are likely to do with this build. Is your dad into 3D CAD renders or will he batch process 200 RAW photos at a time? General tasks do not get faster with more cores, only long running complex tasks.
