The usual spiel:

This is an upgrade for existing AM4 users.

Intel has 5-10% better performance for the same price (at the price of higher power consumption) for new builds

Only get the G version if you're absolutely sure you'll use Integrated Graphics

Otherwise buy the 5600 non-X version for $5 more. With the G version you only get 16 MB L3 Cache. The 5600 has 31 MB L3 cache. Ryzen is very memory bandwidth limited.

this plus that $85 mobo and you got yourself a nice cpu/mobo combo for under $300

Once you figure in the cost of an Intel motherboard, you're typically much cheaper with the AMD platform. When you figure that AMD supports their older chipsets with new CPUs, it becomes even more of a gap. Granted, I'm not eeking out each % of performance from my CPU, but I popped a modern Ryzen into my 370 motherboard with ease, and my board is almost 5yrs old at this point. Someday I'll replace it, but for now I just wanted a quick hit.

No worries running a 4K monitor and playing 4K video with a 5600G. 5700G and 5600G no different in that regard.
Good to know! Thanks!

Yeah, the 5600G will be way more than enough for those tasks.

The 5700G is only better for strictly light gaming (Sims4, Fortnite, 5 year old games, etc)

I just picked up a 3070 earlier with the bbuy drop... I have a 6700k i7... I may need a new processor/mobo so it doesn't bottleneck, don't want to spend a lot ... Is this CPU any good? Can you guys recommend something?

Thanks for the opinion! I am just making a build for my parents running Ubuntu, so I don't need a cutting edge chip, but I want to future proof the system as much as possible. I think I am going to wait for a deal on the 5700G. I am not going to be running a graphics card, so I would like to get as much graphical processing power as possible out of the chip.
If they are only browsing and doing video, what about an Intel i3-10105 for $75 + MB for $60? The intel630 integrated graphics isn't as strong as the 5600g but more than adequate for 4k.

Edit: make sure you have a HDMI cable thats up-to-spec. Needs to be hdmi 2.0. compliant cable for 60hz, 1.4 will get you 3840x2160 @ 30hz. If youre using a displayport to HDMI adapter, make sure its hdmi 2.0 compliant and supports 4k at 60hz.

Thanks for the suggestion! I prefer AMD, and I want to give them as much future proofing as I can for the price.

do you think the reason why all my games are crashing is because of my cpu? currently have b450 / 2600x / 16gb ram / 2060super and nvme ssd. I keep getting BSODS and all my games crash constantly but rarely on remote desktop for work. I know war zone is known for issues and poor optimization. thanks for any feedback

Makes me wonder what "Prime day" prices will be..
Computer hardware is hardly ever on sale during prime day. Its usually just accessories like mice and keyboard.

If you went 3070 and spent that much I'd pick up an Intel 12600k and probably an Intel B660 board and some cheap DDR4 RAM.

That hardware combo should be enough to run almost any game decently. BSOD is either faulty PSU or ram, or maybe motherboard. Sounds like it's having problems when under load so could be overheating.

Hijack here, would the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 support ddr 4 2400? Everything I've read says it doesn't "go that low". Not sure if it means it's not ideal or just a no go.

ugh ok will slowly start swapping parts out to test. already tested another ssd and gpu and it still happened. testing another cpu and ram tonight and will consider psu and mobo next but would dread that because I stripped a m2 screw and don't think I can remove my mobo from my case.

if anyone else has suggestions open to it this has been going on off and on for two years and I'm over it lol

Recently did a upgrade for someone going from 2400G to a 5600G on a B350 board with the BIOS update. Memory controller is a lot better on this processor. Zen 3 doesn't seem to be as fickle with memory. Reused existing RAM, which were rated for 2666MHz, and were definitely not on the memory QVL list for the board. Easily got this to 3200MHz. Didn't tighten the timings. I would assume that RAM should be able to get higher, but obviously, YMMV.

Go to MC, get a Ryzen 5 4500 cpu for $110. Go to the open box motherboards section, and get a motherboard for about $55, for $165 total. Use the $20 off combo to bring it down to $145.
Then get a REALLY budget refurb video card for about $20-$25. Total cost is $165-$170.

Then you can wait until after August, when the video card prices plummet, and upgrade.

Want to build a budget build for my 6yo so he can play some minecraft. Is this good enough to run minecraft by itself or would it need a GPU also?
