I've had the big brother version of this since January, the GS-AX5400 and it's been great. Easy to set up with the app and I haven't had to reboot it. I think this is a killer deal for this price from a reputable retailer. You can find these on ebay for a hundred bucks but you still pay tax so in the end I think it makes sense for peace of mind to just buy from wal mart for a few bucks more. You may be able to win an auction for the AX5400 for a little more than this but you are always chancing it with ebay imo.

I think this is a killer deal for this price from a reputable retailer. You can find these on ebay for a hundred bucks but you still pay tax so in the end I think it makes sense for peace of mind to just buy from wal mart for a few bucks more. You may be able to win an auction for the AX5400 for a little more than this but you are always chancing it with ebay imo.

Well they have been cheaper. From my understanding some wal marts mistakenly put these strix routers on clearance for like 60 bucks but it didn't last long. That is why ebay is flooded with them still.
I currently run an AC5300 with several other ASUS routers in Aimesh via wired backhaul. Looking to upgrade the base router to 802.11ax. Anyone know if there would be any drawback to moving to this model as my base router? (any lost features or capabilities?)

I highly doubt you'd run into issues. While ASUS sucks at updating their products for greater than 1-2 years, they tend to do well with compatibility with their networking features across generations without some kind of upcharge. Worse case scenario, just return it

If your not using the triband portion of the AC5300, than you would not be losing anything that stands out. The triband provides flexibility if your doing wireless AiMesh but since you have wired backhaul thats not really an issue for you.
Seems like a lower end option for replacing a AC5300 though since its a 4x4 design vs a 2x2 design, even though the performance of the AX3000 would be a big upgrade, this has a better CPU and pretty similar ram setup.
Trying to find a reason on why not to do it, but honestly nothing coming to mind, worth trying.

If your not using the triband portion of the AC5300, than you would not be losing anything that stands out. The triband provides flexibility if your doing wireless AiMesh but since you have wired backhaul thats not really an issue for you.

Totally agree currently have the 5400model and it's been amazing, tested a high end Linksys model, Eero 6 pro , Latest Nighthawk and imo Asus is better. Love the in-depth network settings, runs cool (unlike Eero), rarely any packet lost or high pings after 1 month in

Depends what AC5300 version you have.. there's two different models. RT-AC5300 and GT-AC5300.
The later release has a better A53 1.8 BCM 4908 quad which is still currently being used on modern "high end" routers. Only the GT-AX6000 has the next gen processor on a smaller node.
AX radios, especially this one have a faster clock rate @ 1.5ghz while the old Wave 2 radios run at 800mhz, though to be fair ASUS's stuff is faster than other brands.

It's not really a tri core FYI. ASUS marketing sucks when it comes to real comparative specs, but we can blame broadcom on that.
Config on this one is a tri core SoC which factors the radio processor. In reality it's a dual core A7 + 2 radio processors.
The better version of AC5300 is quadcore A53 + 3 radio processors.
With that said, performance depends on environment and channel selection. I have a GTAC2900 that out performs an AXE10000 on channel 161 Unii-3, but its weaker on Unii-1. That's with an AX200 client.
As far as the tri-band I'd still be able to use that because the 5300's would be still used and wired in. My concern was more what you addressed in the second half. The ASUS RT-AC5300 is a dualcore 1.4Ghz and it has 512MB RAM and 128MB Flash compared to this which is weird tricore 1.5Ghz and it has 512MB RAM and 256MB Flash.
You were not specfic which AC5300 you had so I even checked on the GT-AC5300 and yes that one indeed has a quad-core 1.8Ghz processor and 1Gig of RAM and 256MB of Flash.
So depending on which of the AC5300 you have if its the RT version this would be a good upgrade over all. If its against the GT (ROG VERSION) that does get extremely trickier because even with newer components in this, the older GT should still be able to out multi task and in general hold together the AiMesh better just in my opinion. If the stats on the GS-AX3000 and their performance tests were better I would say try it out, but against the GT I think long term it would not hold up as well if you add a lot of devices.

It would definitely seem that way to me. Worse case scenario you can always keep using your RT-AC5300, just turn off the wifi on it and use the GS-AX3000 for wireless in that area if you want to get the AX standard, that way wifi falls to the GS-AX3000 routing and switching is handled by the RT-AC5300.
Yes the RT-AC5300 is more common, I have one myself, which is why I assumed that is the one you had.
