Can we all just move to Thunderbolt at this point? The speeds are there, the port is the same… let's just do it and get the prices down.

Thunderbolt 4 on paper is everything USB 4 is (will be) and more. But a 40 GB/s interface isn't likely to be cheap.

I have a similar enclosure from a different manufacturer, and these things get quite hot depending on the SSD you put into them. Any SSD will work for bursty loads but for anything sustained I'd recommend using an SSD that's designed for low power and low heat.

I'm pretty sure the bottom of this is plastic. Top is aluminum with decent thermal pad though.

I have this but just an FYI, it is very narrow and likely won't work with anything with a big heatsink. I tried to use a 980 Pro in here to transfer some files over from laptop's original secondary drive to the 980 Pro but since it didn't fit, I had to install the 980 pro in my laptop first and then put the original secondary m.2 in this to transfer my files over.

People seem to like the RTL9210, which is what this Sabrent has. But yes, this enclosure will be limited to around 1 GB/s (1000 MB/s) no matter how fast your SSD is due to the USB interface's limit (see attached pic from an Amazon review showing same drive attached to PCIe 4, PCIe 3, and this enclosure). It's fast enough to clone an old SSD to a new SSD, but if you want buy an SSD to use with this enclosure as a long-term external drive, you're wasting money if you get a really fast SSD (e.g., PCIe 4.0) for it. Of course, if you have an old SSD that you wouldn't use otherwise, this is a nice solution that'll be way faster than most USB thumb drives.

Am I going to need this for the M.2 SSD I just bought so I can swap out the HDD in my dell xps 15 from 2016. The laptop has a unused M.2 slot. Or will i just be able to copy everything over using the internal M.2 slot?

My EC-SNVE was just like yours even after flashing newer firmwares. It finally died during a transfer, and would kill my USB controller which a reboot would only fix. After contacting Sabrent with a detailed explanation, they sent out a replacement ASAP. The new one is super stable, even though I haven't updated the firmware on it.

Also, I have the other brand that costs $16 which also works well. However, the Sabrent is nicer design that uses about 3X more aluminum to keep your drive cooler.
