I wired a USB cable to the battery contacts and ran it off a power bank. At 5V it's running a bit faster than the batteries.

Try adding a few diodes in series, each diode will knock 0.7 volts

the battery compartment is quite big. I have soldered on a JST connector inside and have a 4x18650 (4P) pack connected to it inside. Works great.
