Great price, very stylish and love that it's powered via USB to eliminate cable clutter. I don't love the 1 Year Warranty though [seagate.com]...

You would be better off with the WD_Black P10 Game Drive 5TB IMO that has 3 year Warranty. Not as stylish of course but more reliable and better build quality. It's strange that Gamestop has all these great deals recently; at least I think so laugh out loud

Lol, 1 year warranty means it'll last for 1 year 3 month.

They're trying to pivot to being more of a Best Buy.

The WD drives are probably going to have the USB adapter built in to the drive, making it not shuckable and data retrivale imposible. Dont use the WD portable drives for important data. Seagates may be shuckable and that would make data somewhat more retrivable.. With a drive this size that might be even more important than you would think. It is a lot of data in one spot. . If it is just for games, I guess it is fine, but I have found that USB powered drives are somewhat more prone to inadvertant damage if say the plug gets loose during use or the system +5v rail at the plug dips below 5vdc. The heads may crash in to the platter. I know it is more comvienant to have the small 2.5 inch drive with less cord clutter, but if you use the 3.5 inch drives with their own power supply, you might find it a bit more reliable over the long run if you can keep it securely on your desk and all the plugs and conections from moving about. The small 2.5 inch USB drives seem to be always moving about your desk because they are so small.

Does anyone know if this specific drive is shuckable? Looking around no one seems to know or have teared it apart yet. The other WD 5TB one isn't shuckable as it has its connectors soldered on.

Seagate is AFAIK is mostly (or all?) shuckable. WD portable drives, like you said, is the reverse—pretty much all not shuckable because the USB connector is right on the back of the drive.

I guess the plus side is it does make the portable drive slightly shorter by half an inch, but I have encountered many times where just the connector board dies and the drive is actually fine. So it makes it a lot harder to transfer the data off.

The 8TB version is at $116. Select PC instead of Universal. Not the lowest it has been before but still a good price.

I agree about GameStop. If they are smart they will transition —at least in part— to being a gaming hardware discounter. But I'm not sure about WD compared to Seagate. Warranties aren't everything. I had the 5TB WD passport and it failed in the first few weeks with almost no movement and only brief use. I bought the Seagate 8TB drive a few weeks ago when it was $100 and have had no issues . I use it everyday and it is on whenever my computer is on . Yes WD replaced my 5TB drive (probably with a refurb) but the data is still lost . My external files were also backed up with a DROBO so nothing was lost permanently, but if this were my only external storage the warranty would be very little comfort.

I've had very much the opposite luck with externals, learned to steer clear of Seagate in general but worst was a few years ago so they may have upped their reliability. Never had problems with WD. Just my experience tho.

Agree. Just had an 8TB 3.5 external Seagate go out on me but still have a 2.5 4TB WD external still trucking. Got both about 4 years ago.

Dont't bother. They sell out but keep taking orders. When you look up order status, it will come up no such order. A day later you will see the order status as waiting for product and that you will be notified when released. it happened with people who ordered late with the WD deal and it is happening to me earlier this morning with the same error message. If you ordered yesterday and can see the order, you got lucky.

I guess it is a way for them to collect accounts, names and addresses and credit card info.
