These can not be upgraded to Windows 11 (supported by MS).

How so? We aren't talking about a dual-CPU Sandy Bridge system with multiple GPUs here; this is a basic 6th gen with limited ad-ons. I wouldn't expect more than 20-25W average.

Assuming 25W average, that's less than $32/year running 24/7 at the US average 14.47 cents/kWh. You might be able to knock $20 a year off that number if you get a super power efficient 8W system, but I wouldn't call a delta of $0.05 a day costly. (Obviously this may change a bit for people in CA/AK/HI or the north east, but even then we're still only talking maybe $0.10/day.)

If you're interested in this, also check goodwill online. I have an i3-6100 based SFF machine I won in auction for ~ $50 recently.

Indeed great for home servers

Depends - what do you need? What do you need to run, how many physical Ethernet ports do you need?

If you legitimately need to run heavy, depending on your traffic and what additional services you might need, then you may actually need this. If not, you can find all sorts of smaller, cheaper USFF boxes on eBay that will burn half the power and take up even less space, likely with less noise as well.

And even if you do plan on running a lot of services you may still be better with a thin client and a 4 port NIC, paying a bit more for the machine up from but getting more horsepower at a lower energy cost. Over time (2-3 years) a few dollars a month in difference would probably offset your initial savings.

Would this be good for a Mame arcade or the newer Gen i3?

A SFF prebuilt chassis like this is not a good candidate for a NAS. It only has room for (1) 3.5" drive OR (2) 2.5" drives, and a PCIe 3.0 x2 NVMe.

It all comes down to whether you need to transcode (adding subtitles, audio format incompatibility, lower resolution for mobile clients, etc). If you can direct play everything, the CPU requirements are minimal. Once you throw in transcoding though, they can jump substantially, especially if you don't have the hardware to offload it to a QuickSync/NVENC encoder.
True, the only time I've had trouble is with adding subtitles.Ive never needed to change res or audio. I think most people are just direct streaming the video file.

maybe I am a bit skeptical here, but the back panel does does look very hot.
no VGA, no PS/2, not many USB ports (as on other models), no additional DP.
Can only do 2 monitor setup. My Dell pc from 8 years ago can do three out of the box.
While I don't disagree with your assessment, I think the subset of home users running VGA monitors, PS/2 peripherals, or a triple monitor setup is fairly small.

Good point. you are absolutely right - this pc is good for an average home user. ps/2 is typically used by gamers who demand performance and DP/DVI/HDMI are more dominant these days. I got my monitors from thrift store and garage sales. Ironically, the VGA port was dominant in these - so yes I am a little biased.

Would this be okay to run an arcade brain through hyperspin perhaps? just to emulate a few arcade games? would want to run marvel vs capcom 2 though and I hear that needs some beef to run...

This would make a super beefy OPNSense box
I'd say try those N5105-based mini PC on Aliexpress for that.

You get a barebone (no RAM no HDD/SSD) 4-core Jasper lake, 4 2.5GbE NIC (I225, B3 stepping), for ~$150
And low i(especially dle) power consumption, and fanless

For people needing a NAS, check if you have an old/current router with USB 3.0 ports.

You can use the router firmware (if it has the features needed), or flash a compatible DD-WRT and get FTP SSH SAMBA etc for free.
I have a 12TB USB in service and stream videos to all my TVs(with shield/chromecast) /Computers

If I wanted a machine to be able to play AAA games off of Steam, would the Dell or the Acer be the better option to go with?

What do you suggest for under $200 then?
Take a look at HP T620. It's perfect for pfSense and very power efficient.
