And because of a lawsuit, you basically can't group speakers together.
For instance I use to be able to cast Lofi around my entire house for some nice background music no matter where I go. Now that's impossible.
Honestly it's gotten so much worse, I've been thinking about switching.
The issue with any Google product is that you never know when Google will just randomly cancel it. Why? Google's promotion system still relies on employees making new products and services. Maintaining existing product lines will not get you promoted. This is a big reason why Google ends up cancelling products, just to release a similarly product with a different name. Worse is when they completely kill off a product like Nest Protect or even the Nest App and replace it with something inferior and broken e.g. I don't think they fixed Nest Cam integration with their Google Home app yet. They just don't like maintenance. Another example is even years after release, having different profiles on Google TV will only work by luck.
To be fair all of the smart home platforms have their pros and cons. Google's cons just really piss me off.

Sadly she will not pronounce Mickey Ds as "Maccas".

Over time, though, they're slowly becoming Apple.
I mean, it took 5 years for them to get "if/then" statements for their routines and they're still very rudimentary. Whereas, Alexa has had simple things like that available from the start.
When you also factor in that their Nest team is still not fully integrated with Google, it just feels like the bubble is going to burst at any point and Google will have to start from scratch.
It also doesn't help that none of the smart functionality is built into the device and requires the internet for everything. I would gladly host a local server to handle requests, but Google doesn't want to miss out on any of that data collection. And, sadly, third party solutions like Hubitat can't fix this either.
But on the other hand, Amazon's devices with displays just constantly display ads... screw that nonsense.

The only feature removed is that you cannot control the volume for the entire group, but have to do it individually (Thanks Sonos).
Also added is each speakers sensitivity to the trigger word (e.g. hey google), depending on the placement of the speakers, you could try tweaking (increase some, decrease others), to improve their recognition.
Hope this helps and works for you.

I can cast to individual speakers, but not the group.
This started right when they removed those "Sonos" features.
As for the sensitivity, I'm not having any issues with it "hearing" commands. What I'm saying is overall, understanding my commands has gotten worse and worse over the last 2 years. I used to be able to use my routine "TV off" and it would turn my TV off and turn off the fan I have pointed at my PS4 and turn off the smart-LED strip I have on the back of the TV.
Now when I say "TV off" it just tells me it doesn't know what device I want it to control.
This is just one example of many things I used to be able to do and now I struggle with.
Another is the ability to play white noise for a certain amount of time. I used to have a routine set up to play rain noise at 10pm and play until 10am the next day. That stopped working long ago. And if I try to say something like "Hey Google, play rain noise for 10 hours" it will just play for an hour, then stop. My research shows that many people have the issue.
All in all, I loved Google, but they just continue to get worse.

That said, if you only want one, you can get it for $60 at pretty much everywhere right now (e.g. target with red card 5% discount would be a decent deal).

It used to be solid and understand like 9/10 commands at first (maybe 4-5 years back when I started getting into smart homes), but in the last year or two it's become super frustrating with Alexa not understanding much of what we say and/or lagging for no reason and not responding. To add insult to injury Alexa will start suggesting random "new features" after getting the initial command completely wrong.
We also have some google home stuff, and honestly it's about the same or a bit better maybe than Alexa. We're undecided as to what to stick with for now so we have a mix.
For months streaming video or audio, any kind of audio on one speaker would stop audio from every other speaker. We use these for white noise and a makeshift baby monitor but doing both wasn't possible for months.
Several times a day I will get confirmation that my command was heard and that it's doing exactly what I wanted it to do only for her to sit there like a brick and do nothing. Happens 5+ times a day.
I'll ask it to play music and it will start and then stop 5 seconds later for no reason. I'll have to try several times before it finally starts playing music and continues to without stopping. Sometimes a reboot stops this behavior.
I will whisper in one speaker's ear, only to have a speaker on the other side of the house in the basement respond that couldn't possibly have heard me.
The same command will work until it doesn't. When it stops working. It's so ingrained for you to phrase it a certain way that you keep going back to that phrasing. Annoying right? Even more annoying is phrasing will sometimes work on one speaker but not the other. For example, if I say stop the kitchen, it will know to stop audio in the kitchen, unless I say it to the living room speaker. That one in particular has no idea what I'm talking about. If I ask it to play music on one speaker it might listen and play on one speaker but it will complain on another that it doesn't have a screen and thus can't play video. This would be fair if I ask it to play something like top gun, but I'm asking it to play Michael Jackson's thriller or something that's obviously a song.
I will just randomly get a message that says I need a subscribe to YouTube for it to play music. I am subscribed to YouTube premium.
This whole ecosystem is absolute trash right now. Google's gotten a ton of feedback on it and they just don't seem to care. every day gets worse and worse
The algorithms for these are strictly for use within a few inches away from the display whereas non- screen devices are for being several feet away from the device. And also, google really hates you knowing the time on these. If you do anything on the display, the clock disappears completely. For example, listen to music or the news while you get ready? No clock. This baffles me. My experience was so bad with these displays, I went to a lenovo essentials clock and am much happier.

And these devices are awesome! I have had a few for the past 3 years and they have always worked like a charm.
