I used mine (older model) recently to measure my furnace startup current so I could size a generator.

any uses for this for an average homeowner?
have a DMM for checking voltage and that was used quite often when wiring smart switches and outlets, and troubleshooting some circuitry.
not sure if measuring amps is something I'd need (haven't had to yet).

Agree - checking for the generator is the only time I've used the clamp/current feature of mine. Others may have better use cases.

ahh, hitting closer to home. I recently replaced my HVAC contactor based on visual appearance and it fixed the issue. bought a capacitor as a standby just in case.

Some appliance diagnostics/repairs (motor draw, igniter function, etc.) need the AC current clamp. Solar troubleshooting could need the DC current clamp. The DC clamp functionality is usually a more expensive feature of these meters.

Has anyone used this for automotive diagnostics like searching for parasitic battery drain? In one of the reviews the guy stated there's a "dead zone" up to 300 milliamps

Same question.. Just looking at it though that dead zone makes sense, the clamp is huge compared to most of the automotive wires, it seems unlikely it could accurately measure such small magnetic fields.

But if anyone knows for sure, I have the same question

I managed to use Discover promo - the "make Discover default method of payment, get $20 off" (search Doctor of Credit, not sure links are allowed here) to make this a better deals. Took $20 off no issues since it was sold by Amazon.

You might want something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

These still have low current limitations because it relies on the strength of the magnetic field outside of the wire.
For low amperage parasitic draws in a car, I suggest looking at fuse voltage drop testing.
