They usually update this every 2 years or more, current gen is from 2021.

This deal is only slightly better if you roll your discounted gift cards you got from previous deals.
There are actually recent rumors of a new model this year, but nothing confirmed. At an effective price of $129 I still think the 32gb4k is good if you want one now.

Buy and return after 15 days, apple policy. Anyway with smart tvs why do you need these i dont know
Because "smart TVs" generally get laggy fast without a wipe/reset/reinstall. If you have multiple TVs, having a unified platform across them all is invaluable. Finally, smart TV versions of apps tend to get neglected and receive upgrades last - if ever. Once you've used a dedicated box like an atv4k or shield, you'll never want to go back.

It's crazy people buy this. So many streaming sticks/boxes or just plain good quality TV Smart OS that I can't fathom why anyone would spend $200 on this?

It's either, go cheap and get firestick or Roku for under $30 or go expensive and buy $1500 TV that includes fast enough internals to use their Smart OS smoothly. With the way older models have been on sale, specifically Samsung? You can buy yourself 75" for $1500, the very top quality model too.
Clueless.

Anyone here ever compare this Apple TV device to the Chromecast w/ Google TV device? If so, what were your thoughts?

I don't have any Apple devices (none) so I'm not sure if it's worth the extra cost (Apple TV vs Google's device).

I couldn't disagree more, cut the cord seven years ago and going cheap or depending on your TV manufacturer to make a stable experience are probably the worst options I've seen/experienced. If you are on a budget go the cheap route, but you are paying the price in other ways besides money. Also, if you don't like Apple that is fine, pick up the one of the nVidia options instead. I will say if you aren't completely cutting the cord, then maybe go the routes you mention as well. However, it really adds up as you use a less than great (or even mediocre) streaming device/app/OS.

If you aren't already invested into the Apple ecosystem, I'd definitely recommend a Chromecast w/ GTV ($39.99 on Amazon) or NVIDIA Shield based on what your budget is. The worst part about the Chromecast w/ GTV is the remote though, a lot of issues with the circular ring navigation.

For example, Apple TV is very locked into the Apple ecosystem so if you're buying movies or TV shows -- that ecosystem will be going into iTunes as opposed to Google Play Movies.

Additionally, you won't be able to utilize AirPlay without Apple devices anyway. Chromecasting content would be more beneficial for you.

Forget about the 4k Version, whatever smart devices are out there to the Apple tv HD version. Apple tv is smooth, sleek, fast, clear, subtitles are well organized, now getting games from Arcade that can sync with PS4/XBOX remote. Been using it from version 2 and I have all smart devices Amazon 4k and NVIDIA, and Roku nothing is close to Apple tv.

Can Android Phones (specifically a S22+) cast to this device as easily as a Chromecast?

EDIT: Did some research on my own and it won't.

I see. Thanks for that. Funny you mentioned the remote on the Chromecast / Google device, I very much dislike that remote, personally.
