Suggest you find out what MERV your HVAC manufacturer recommends. I was using MERV 13 in my Rheem units that are 4 years old. My upstairs unit struggled on hot days to keep it cool. Turns out Rheem recommends 8-11. I replaced them with Merv 8 and it immediately made a world of difference in ability to cool house! Flow increased substantially! Using a higher MERV will filter out more but can restrict flow if your unit. Check your HVAC manufacturer's recommendation.
I went one step further and went down to 'Merv 4. Airflow through the system probably doubled and cooling went through the roof. Your hvac system is not designed to act as a whole house air filter. Use the merv recommended by the manufacturer to keep the largest particles out of your air handler and nothing more
This is BS. They were never that expensive to begin with. Costco, much as I like them, are becoming really annoying. They are rapidly becoming the store where you can buy items in bulk at the same price everywhere is selling them in smaller quantities. Who needs to pay an annual subscription for that?

In the past, l've gotten the Nordic Pure filters from Amazon for about $30 each, so paying $20 each for the Filtrete ones sounds like a better deal.
Amazon has the "slimfit" versions of some of these they are slightly smaller that were made just the these cases where the official rated size is a little too big for the AC.

So i bought a 5 pack of Merv16 as they were there already and our family has allergy issues and in NJ pollen / rag weed is bad. I couldn't believe they were listed for $120 each or more in most places. I found a 5 pack under $500 from samedaysupply.com, so I bought it.. Then I found out I have 2 sizes... and the 20x20's I bought wont fit the upstairs unit... I think I may just get the Merv12 here... Thanks!!

You really out here spending $100 on a furnace filter lmao
Your link is for 1 inch thick filters which are way less money than the ones we are talking about here. What we are talking about here is four and 5 inch thick filters.
Unfortunately, the regular 2200s aren't also on sale to be cheaper than the "smart" filters. I don't feel the need to have an app tell me to change my filter (I already have a Nest and fiance doing that) or another piece of tech garbage to dispose of.
Not only what your saying is true but many reviewers and my own experience is that this "smart" filter is nothing more than an elaborate timer that does not really monitor air quality. Even worse, once the app disconnects for a period of time it does not remember when you changed the filter. I went almost three months and finally thought it seems awful weird a 1" filter doesn't need changed yet. Next time I stopped by the property (condo lock and leave) sure enough the filter was absolutely black and was starting to cave-in due to static pressure. I switched back to Nordic Pure.
Being a cheap b*****d, I buy ones off Amazon Warehouse and just cut them to size. Dented or banged up a bit still work just fine . I need 12x18's and 18x18's. For me, the perfect score are 30x18's which cut down perfectly. One side not having a frame stays in place without issue.
And how do you stop the air from bypassing the filter on the side that is cut Since it won't be a good seal there?
