I have several boxes like this from Ridgid and Milwaukee. Here are my impressions.

I've looked at other brands, and walked away laughing -- Craftsman, Husky, Hart, etc are flimsy wanna-be boxes. Even some of the DeWalts fall into this bucket too. Thin, cheap plastic, lots of twisting & bending, and the worst of which -- terrible latches. They're not worth it. And they're priced too close to Ridgid to be competitive as a bargain option.

If you aren't a professional contractor hauling around the maximum weight limit of these boxes every single day in adverse conditions -- save your cash and buy Ridgid. Using arbitrary figures -- Ridgid is about 90% of the Milwaukee quality for half the price.

If you're a serious contractor where money isn't an object...when "you absolutely can't have something fail" -- look at Milwaukee. It's a better build quality, but with diminishing returns. They can hold a lot more weight, take a lot more abuse. They exude a premium fit and finish....with quite a few case options to choose from. If I was professional, I'd go with big red and not look back.

But if you're a weekend warrior/homeowner/casual repairer -- big red is spending a premium for something you're probably never going to take advantage of. Ridgid and Milwaukee will hold up equally fine under the same average conditions. Save your cash and buy two oranges instead of one red. Or put that cash into actual tools.

Ridgid is the sweet spot in tool cases right now. And if they're on sale, you can't go wrong.
Here are the pictures of the prices on the shelf.

Snagged a set yesterday, last one the store had. Looks like they are closing these out for the Ryobi offering instead. These are bullet proof the Ryobi plastic is much thinner and cheaper feeling IMO. I was very surprised to find it and looking forward to using it for work tools and samples.

I've got nothing except Ryobi cordless tools. I looked at their similar storage offerings, and came away with the same conclusion regarding quality of construction. Frown

Thanks!

I like these. Got a deal for the set a couple years back. Super solid and durable.

I use the small one as my drill box. Holds m18 drill, m18 driver, two batteries, 4 of the folding hard cases of bits and tips. The medium size I keep in my truck as part of my traveling tool box and rv repair tools.

I also have a number of the tool crates which I wish would go on sale again.

Can anyone suggest an economical pickable foam insert that fits the Small boxes?

This is dead on accurate. Have several of sets of both versions of red and rigid, along with a couple dewalt.
Can't go wrong with either choice…by far the two best on the market, on all fronts.
Thanks for taking the time to share this info. Very helpful to anyone without prior, personal experience!

It's not pickable (higher density cuttable foam) -- and it's actually more than the cost of the box itself -- but https://kaizeninserts.com/t/ridgid makes some decent custom-cut foam inserts for the boxes.

Otherwise, I'd suggest getting some cheap foam floor mats from Horror Fright Ghouls, gluing them together, then custom cutting them. But between your time & effort, it might be more economical to just buy the kaizen foam pre-made.

If you can't find the larger boxes in the 'box section' check the front of the store where they have the brand sections for milwaukee, ridgid, ryobi, etc. They had a couple 3 box stacks tucked in the corner, price unmarked.

Just bought this set at my Home Depot in west Allis (53214). Prices were higher on the in store signs but rang up as OP listed.

Seeing $25/$35/$60 on brickseek around here. Looks cool. Brickseek is usually right but maybe they get discounted at the register. Hmm.

Grabbed mine; seems sturdy for a good price. I didn't check the small compartment organizer and may go back and check it out

I have this Ridgid system. It's built to last, and unlike some cheaper brands, it will hold bulky things like drills and circular saws. What it lacks is good organizing for smaller things and there are not as many add-on options like you find with Milwaukee.

I looked at these in the store yesterday not fully understanding it was better than the typical crossed out price with a lower price gimmick that most stores run. The shelf sticker was marked with OP's prices even though brickseek and the HD app still show full price. Went back and bought them today. Can vouch for the off gassing; plan on letting the boxes breath outside for a few days before using.
