I bought it and returned it later. It's an odd design. It can be hung but it tips over easily when standing specially for outdoor use.

$5.50 now, but will still pass on this great price since it takes 4 D batteries. For some reason, I don't like any products that takes anything other than AA, AAA or rechargeable batteries. Am I wrong to discriminate batteries like this?

They just make these to sell more batteries. Just buy something rechargeable

For something that is used infrequently, not sure if I would prefer a lantern that takes alkaline or had a rechargable battery. Both would degrade over time.

I got a few to keep in my camping kit. I'll throw some long shelf life alkalines in there also. Thought about going the rechargeable route even getting some AA to D adapters and rechargeables but in the end I'm going to use it so infrequently that storing alkalines with them is probably the best bet.

Getting a set of 4 AA to D battery adapters will likely to cost more than this LED Lantern itself…

These are always toy-like quality

Take the $5 and buy a 18650 flashlight and battery which can sit a year without a charge and will put out 10 times the light for 10 times as long, hang the flashlight strap on something if you need to light a room/car

To prevent tipping over, It looks like it folds out maybe 90 degrees for a sturdy base if you want to stand it outdoors..like an "L" shape.?

At least it looks like it does.
