I have tested both Onkyo TX-NR6050 and Yamaha TSR-700 7.2 . in a 5.1.2 setup in my den. I kept the Yamaha and here is why:

Setup -Both are easy, no issues at all

HDMI Input - With both receivers, the Ruko and Sony Blu-Ray player plugged in and worked perfectly. But then, here comes the DirecTV Streamimg box. The DirecTV Streaming box is JUNK! The Yamaha did not like it at all. I had to take off the HDMI control to get it to work on the Yamaha. If I didn't do that, the HDMI would switch to another input, like the Roku. I looked up this problem with DirecTV and they said to disable HDMI control on the DirecTV box. Well, this the new Streaming box and it does NOT have this setting. I do not watch that much TV so I wound up not using the DirecTV Streaming box and just using the DirecTV app in the Roku, problem solved.

With the Onkyo receiver, the DirecTV Streaming box worked fine.

Front Display - The Yamaha front display is really small where the Onkyo is normal size and looks nice. The good thing in my den is the Yamaha is close to where I sit so the small size is not a problem for me. In my living room, that would be a problem and the Onkyo will work out great there.

I never tried the Denon receiver, with only 75 per channel, that just does not seem like enough to push my speakers

TV Display - With the Yamaha, when you are playing Adobe Vision, the volume control will NOT display. When not using Adobe Vision, the volume control displays fine. On the Onkyo, the volume control displays fine in all modes.

Sound quality, most important to me - I only use the den to watch movies. The sound from the Yamaha was a little better than the Onkyo. It was a little more crisp and with the Atmos sound is where the Yamaha really shinned compared to the Onkyo. I do not have Atmos in my living room so the Onkyo should be fine for that room's setup.

Wattage - Yamaha has 100w per channel while the Onkyo has 90w has 90w per channel. This is maybe why the Yamaha sounds a little better than the Onkyo

I kept the Yamaha over the Onkyo because the Yamaha sounds better, which is what I was after. All the other things were miner for me.

For the living room, I'm going with the Onkyo because of the DirecTV Streaming box issue. That is for my wife and the DirecTV Streaming box works better then Roku DirecTV app.

I bought this like 2 weeks ago when it was on sale and it just died today. The on screen display won't turn on and after googling it, apparently it's happened to a bunch of other people and it's probably due to a broken HDMI chip or something. And apparently onkyo doesn't really have technical support because they were just bought by another company.

So I'm not feeling too good about that purchase. Looks like I have to return mine and I'll try to find a brand I can trust more than this. It sucks because this was my first experience with an AVR, as I'm upgrading from an old soundbar.

I remember we got the denon 4300 for $700. And I got the 4200 for like $800. 50% off sales are what should get you to pull the trigger despite inflation.
I haven't seen a sale like that on receivers for several years now. Fry's closing put a lid on that.

Thanks. Your analysis and position details made me to go for onkyo.

Onkyo is a good brand, in any place you look for receiver reviews they are gonna be a brand that gets recommended. It sounds like you just got a bum unit. Keep in mind they sell millions of units, so you're going to be able to find "a bunch of other people" who also have issues. Make enough things and some of them are gonna have a problem.

Do what you want, just letting you know it isn't some rando company.
But didn't it get sold to another company? I haven't contacted their support line yet but I saw some Reddit comments saying it was really poor due to the change of ownership.

I had the HDMI2.1 Denon, but wasn't too happy with it. I bought the Onkyo and could immediately tell that the Onkyo sounded much better. The Denon just needed to be pushed much harder to get the same volume. I returned the Denon and kept the Onkyo.

The Onkyo is very stable. No issues and has a robust feature set. Menu's are well thought out. It's not a perfect unit though; I have some minor gripes. I do wish the standby screen was black instead of blue (which isn't ideal for OLEDs). Also, its volume overlay looks like it's from the 90's. But considering everything else that they did right, it's easy to look past those minor annoyances.

Thanks for the input. I have the Denon AVR-S760H from Costco now and while it doesn't sound bad, it doesn't drive my Polk LSI speakers nearly as well as an older Pioneer VSX-1121K from 2011, which started have errors after 10 years.

My only question is have you noticed any HDMI hand shaking issues with the Onkyo? The Denon has some HDMI hand shaking issues even after the latest firmware (May 2022). It does not happen often, but it is annoying when it does and often requires power cycling the unit to correct the issue.

Having owned both, I kept the Onkyo because the Yamaha had a bunch of issues after updates and the volume always seemed low and lacking sub. The most glaring was a popping/crackling sound that would occur when something wasn't playing.
The Onkyo, on the other hand, always comes across clear and has better surround in my setup. My wife, who has trouble hearing surround due to an inner ear issue, has no problem with the Onkyo. It actually freaked her out the first few movies we watched. We had over a year with the Yamaha and she never said anything. That was pretty huge selling point imo.

Is this about as good as it gets for smart app connectivity? I would love to be able to control from my phone, auto-on with TV or Spotify, etc.

I have a Onkyo TXNR-807 that just stopped producing sound last week... :/

I had 2 Yamaha TSR700 and both had hdmi issues. The second one would even randomly turn on after turning everything off then turn off 45 seconds later. I just picked up the Denon and even though it's lower wattage, I do think the sound performance is better then the Yamaha. I do know we ran the Yamaha at a higher level for the vocals and the denon seems to bring them forward better.

Wow, that has not happened to me, with my Yamaha. I have not had any HDMI issues or no cracking noise. Keeping my fingers crossed that does not happen to me.

I am replacing a 13 year old, 145w per channel, receiver Thursday, the day my new Onkyo will be delivered. I cannot wait to hook it up and see what sound comes out. The Onkyo will be pushing the Infinity Reference speaker system, with the Infinity center being the RC263 speakers. That's the 3-way HUGE speaker. I'm hoping the Onkyo is strong enough to push the center, we will see.

Onkyo just filed for bankruptcy.
This gets posted all the time. The AV part of the company was sold off to Vox (Klipsch parent company) and is not involved in the bankruptcy.

Most of what I read was a bad HDMI board more than a few years back (2010-2013). They made good on a lot of them, but there were some people who feel (no judgement from me) they should have also been included in the repairs.
There may have also been a slightly more recent issue, but that seems to have been repaired as well.

Honest question: Can anyone actually tell the differen e between 5.1 and 5.1.2? Seems like you would need the rear height speakers for it to feel like 3D sound. I have the denon 750h which also supports 5.1.2, but I don't want to bother running wires for additional speakers if it won't make much of a difference.

I have the 5.1.2 set up. The .2 in my system is the Jamo s8 Atmos speakers Link [amazon.com]. These Atmos speakers are add ons to the Jamo S 803 book or tower speakers Bookshelf [amazon.com] - Tower [amazon.com].

The sound is directed to the ceiling and bounces down towards you. My set up has the Atmos in the front. If someone says they have the 5.1.4, they have the Atmos on all four surround sound speakers.

I hope I made since of what I typed, I'm still a little new to the Atmos. the thing I do know is it really made a difference in my system after I got the Atmos speakers. And getting a really nice subwoofer put my system over the top. I splurged on the SVS PB-1000 sub, it really thumps!

This deal is on basically every week. At this point let's just call the sale price the everyday price.

No, I bought the receiver when it was NOT on sale. I bought it because my 13-year-old receiver seems to be going out. I was on the lookout for this receiver to go back on sale, but I had to buy a new receiver anyway, so I bought this one for $500. Then bam, it's back on sale and I saved money. And remember, I only have 30 days to get a price check from Costco.

So, it's time to I let everyone else know it's back on sale AND SAVE MONEY.

Stop downing a good sale price when it doesn't benefit YOU but it benefits others.
