Helpful tip- If you are new to Tracfone be sure to sign up for the Tracfone rewards! You find a valid referral code to sign up for a nice bonus . If you use a top tier code you will maximize the bonus and get 8,000 rewards points ($80 value) in your account. This can be used to buy air time, get phone discounts or add extra data for $10/GB, or minutes, etc.
Activate the phone first, then sign up for rewards with a valid promo code.

Use a top tier one that will get you 8,000 rewards points ($80 value) when you sign up. Most only will get you 5,000 ($50 value)
All I care is my son can call me when he needs and vice versa. What I don't want is my son would use it for playing video games, chat with friends unnecessarily or watch YouTube. What do you propose?

You may have heard of this happening in the past for some reason that may not even be related, but lots do this as a routine.
I've swapped sims 2 years in a row from the new phone back to a tracfone from 3 years ago
Understood, I've done it in the past as well - but that was before Verizon bought Tracfone companies and started making changes. There have been reports of issues in the past few months. It's up to you if you want to take the chance, I'd rather have a reliable phone and do things correctly.

Every other post here would be a complaint that you can't do it if this was the case. There are none

Sims are tied to IMEI of phone they are activated with and while just putting sim in another phone may work for a while Verizon does know it's in the wrong phone & can terminate service whenever they want (it's a violation of TF policy). It's safer to spend $1 for a BYOP sim and legitimately move the number/service to the sim of the new phone - at least that way you can count on having the line work when you need it.
So if I get a BYOP SIM... do I need to activate it with a plan, or can I just transfer the 1 year plan from this bundle over?

You activate new sim keeping current number and current plan/number are moved to new phone sim.

I received the phone last week and haven't opened it yet, but could someone please tell me how the minutes are added to the phone? There is no included refill card and the packaging doesn't mention the 1200 prepaid minutes. I'm a little worried that I'm going to have to pay for a refill card and not get the advertised 1200 minutes.

Mine were already showing in my account when the phone finally activated; no CC or additional purchase needed. Getting it activated and an old number ported over was a 2 day ordeal, but customer service was helpful in getting it all worked out.

It automatically gets added when you activate the phone. They stopped using the separate cards for bundled phones several years ago.

Teach your son that technology is ok in moderation.
