I bought this last year before jumping headfirst into an Adruino / LED project. I'm a complete novice (hadn't soldered since high school) and it has served me well so far. I can imagine someone might outgrow it's capabilities as you hone your skills but at >$40 it seems like a great kit to learn on before dropping $100+ on something better. For my purposes I swapped out the tip for one a bit smaller.

This was my first soldering station. It served me well over the years, until I upgraded to something a little fancier.

Something with a T12 tip probably has the better performance at a lower price.

What station is cheaper and uses t12 tips?

Those tips alone are around $10 a pop so I'm not sure your gonna find a better system with those included for cheaper.

The ones from Ksger and Quicko. The T12 tips are knockoffs, but they work well.

ksger is around $75 and found the Quicko at $45. I bought this for $55 the other day, so I was planning on returning & repurchasing. Would rather get something better in this price range.

I lily the pinecil better than this. Much more portable. Can be powered with an old laptop charger or via a good USB c charger or even a a portable usb power bank.

Good for soldering wires maybe. For circuit boards with sensitive components you need some temperature control.

The pinecil is a digital iron and can be adjusted by increments of 5 degrees celsius. I would argue that it is much more precise than this analog iron with a potentiometer.

I got the Quicko that does not come with the PSU built in for around $20 (just use an old laptop power supply). The prices on Amazon are rather high, you would have to look on Aliexpress or (with a coupon) on urlhasbeenblocked.

This station, while carrying a reputable brand name, has only a variable power control which is a downgrade from variable temperature control - which is what you really want in a soldering station. Power control is just a simple dimmer limiting the output wattage but it has no feedback from the tip of the iron to keep the temperature stable within proper and safe working limits. An experienced technician can use this station adjusting the knob for particular tasks. But in my opinion it's much better to get a station with temp control, even if it's no brand el cheapo, especially that in this price range plenty of those are available.
