I have the Charge 4 which has an altimeter. The 5 is slightly thinner with a high pixel color screen, but they no longer have the altimeter so it does not count stairs/floors which is important to me.
Not true. Stop making things up. They're releasing new trackers along with the Google watch. I know a ton of people that work at Fitbit. They're headquartered in San Diego.

Be aware that Fitbit is a dead ecosystem. They were bought out by Google and Google intends to release the Google Watch this fall. Thet made clear during that announcement that they intend to license Fitbit to whoever wants it (read Chinese). In short, Google bought Fitbit, took the good stuff they wanted for the Google Watch, and are hawking off the rest to the highest bidder(s).
This doesn't mean the watches are bad; it does mean the brand and the ecosystem has no future. There wont be updates or new features released after the end of this year (Google was vague. on the exact date). So take all that into consideration.
PSA: Bought from Costco and returned after a couple of weeks. This device has a bug which causes GPS to get stuck which drains the battery in less than a day. There are multiple user complaints online with no solution. Fitbit has an advisory page indicating "few" devices are impacted but it seems they have given up on finding a fix at this point.

Well, the Pixel Watch essentially is the new Fitbit. All of the fitness tech on the watch is coming from Fitbit. Considering Google is continuing on with that ecosystem, I don't see it being sold off in its entirety any time soon. As for updates on the old models, well Fitbit has always sucked about that. I "upgraded" to a Charge 3, but it failed at its most basic functions and Fitbit ignored the myriad of complaints of same on their own forums. They then repeated the same mistakes with the Charge 4 and once again ignored all pleas to correct them. Consequently, I went back to the Charge 2 and learned that if my Fitbit doesn't do X out of the box, it never will.

I've never tried a Fitbit yet. Why would they get rid of the altimeter? Counting floors/stairs seems like it's pretty important in any fitness tracking device.

Loved my Garmin Vivosmart hr+ for its smaller size and decent GPS tracking during workouts + HR monitoring 24/7. Wish I could find a suitable replacement in the Garmin ecosystem. Fitbit seems like a limited alternative
I've been a Fitbit die hard almost since day one when I got into the pre release beta for the in released Fitbit one device. Have upgraded for years, I'm glad the developers and team got paid, sad to see the competition shrinking. Seems google is doing what they do when they acquire companies. At the same time it seems Fitbit had slowed down when it came to actual advancements so maybe it was time. I like that the battery last for days but if apple could do the same… I would jump ship.
So I just bought a FitBit Charge 5 to replace an Apple Watch which I gave to my brother. For those who think I am nuts, hear me out: The Apple Watch is a beautiful iPhone notification device, but I need less distractions in my life and more focus on fitness and health. I wanted something seamless, something I could wear to bed or on a run which just disappeared and didn't get in the way. I also wanted sleep tracking, more insights into my health and mental wellbeing. Apple Watch offers some of this via third party apps, but each app requires a subscription. Apple Fitness+, Sleep Tracking, Water Logging, etc - I was paying $40 a month compared to $9.99 for Fitbit and I question some of the third party apps that measure sleep analysis for example as they have no medical scientific backing. The Charge 5 is a pretty awesome device: oxygen, heart, ECG, EDA, water proof all in tiny device that lasts about 6-7 days.
Don't wear it on your dominant wrist. It will track extra workouts as marathons and add extra active zone minutes into your weekly report. Fitbit knows a little too much about me....

So far I've liked my Charge 5. It can last almost 2 weeks on a full battery charge, and gives me good stats, esp sleep. I didn't know that over an hour of bedtime is actually spent awake, so I have to pad on an extra hour to get the sleep I need. I one thing that is annoying is the connectivity drops when I try and sync it a lot, so I have to exit the app and reopen it every time. It's a known problem they are trying to fix, connectivity issues.
