$200+ for a 7+ year old processor might be an iffy call. Also going to have a really old battery, most likely, and even if they give you a "new" battery it won't last anywhere near as long as something made in the last 3 years.

I think 480 should be the minimum these days. I know these are primarily for running Linux (which is why I want them anyway).
Since a lot of folks suggest FB marketplace and eBay regular sellers (without warranty), I'll remind them of a design flaw in the where the keyboard presses down on the screen (or up) and the marks can be permanent. Also, unless mentioned, screens are not FHD.
So, lots to navigate.
But if this (470) is fine for you, there's more discussion from 2018 hereā¦.. https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad...0_vs_t480/
For those not worried about Windows 11 yet (Win 10 isn't EOL until October 2025), the 7th gen cpu version of the T470 nets you m.2 nvme compatibility and a usb-c thunderbolt port.

Lenovo Thinkpads and Dell Latitudes are the only laptops that I'll spend my own money on.
They are built to be maintained, and parts are pretty widely available and relatively inexpensive.
Throw another 8GB in this and run a Linux distro and you'll be good for the next 10 years.
I've had great experience with Thinkpad and Latitude laptops as well. I've used Thinkpads at work; never had issues with them and the keyboards are generally very good.
Last year, I got a refurbished Dell Latitude E7470 to use around the house. I love it! Purchased from Dell Refurbished & it was listed as A grade. Received it and it was in like-new condition. The battery status showed it was in excellent condition as well (in Dell BIOS). I really like the solid build quality, fantastic & comfortable keyboard, good screen and reasonable battery life. It's also fairly light (about 3.27 lb) and is VERY quiet. I think it has a cooling fan inside, but not sure as I have not heard it very often. Oh and I bought the 1080p Full HD screen as well (HD screen models were a bit cheaper but I didn't want a lower resolution display). This unit isn't Windows 11 compatible (officially) but I figure I'll hack it to put Win 11 on it if I need to (once Win 10 support ends in 2025 or I can't get security updates anymore in Win 10).
Just remove the one file from the Windows 11 ISO and install it. My almost 8 year old Xeon E5-2697v3 still competes against some of the latest processors out there. There is little need for me to get a newer setup.
I have owned a T470 for a couple of years now and have a love/hate relationship with it. I have never owned such a fragile laptop, and have replaced two screens on mine in the first six months due to dropping it. The older Thinkpads can be dropped on a concrete floor and do not care. Even my T440p, when the line started becoming plastic, has been dropped and was not appreciably damaged.
I stopped trying to use the T470 for work (industrial environment) and use it as a portable "coffee shop" machine and like it a lot better. Not as much as my Yoga 370, but I don't hate it anymore.
The better architecture of the T480+ is well documented but IIRC (never owned one) it's basically the same form factor as the T470 with the relatively heavy base and petite screen. I haven't beaten up any of my newer laptops, but the "slim all around" form factors like my T495s and Yoga 370 feel surprisingly sturdy for what they are.
