There's plenty of laptops today with the 5000 or 6000 series Ryzen chips and OLED or similar panels that will give these new MacBook Air a run for their money.

Imho, the M1 air at the 999 (and sale price of 8-850) was a good deal, but it's too hard to excuse 8/256 in a $1300 laptop.

Pretty much wrong on all counts. I *am* an IT person (over 30 years) who mostly uses/manages/sells Windows-based machines, but also have clients who are all Mac-based so I own Windows desktops, laptops and 2 MacBook Pro's (a 14" M1 Pro and a 16" M1 Pro) and had a M1 Mac Mini and yes, I do look at specs. You're shooting in the dark if you don't.

I will be completely honest in saying that while using my MacBook or Dell XPS laptop, I don't notice that one is any better (performance-wise) than the other. They run different OS's but the MacBook definitely isn't night/day better than the Dell or vice versa.

With regards to minimal RAM and swap to SSD, we'll see how the SSD wear is on that Mac SSD in a few years vs a system with 16/32GB RAM, where swap to disk is minimal. And while SSD is fast, RAM is magnitudes faster.

Having the flexibility to upgrade RAM or SSD is great. Buy small, pay less to upgrade yourself compared to giving Apple 10X more money for the same thing and having it fixed in there for life.

BE CAREFUL with this, because you're actually buying the $150 gift card as the total is deducted from the purchase price of the MacBook. So if you return the MacBook you don't get a refund for the gift card; you're stuck with it.

The heat isn't the biggest issue unless you do heavy duty cpu work over extended periods of time. Then the performance gets throttled. More important and probably a requirement is to upgrade to 512 ssd from 256 because the 256 reads/writes are fast but half as fast as any larger size ssd.

I've been hoarding those Apple gift card promos and I have enough to cover this. I saw they charge separately for the Apple Gift Card, do I need to pony up a separate $150 on a credit card to cover this, or does it all come out of the Apple GC balance?

This is objectively true, and yet you're still getting thumbs down. Apple fanboys out in full force

Fact of the matter is barely any NVME's even come in 256gb size, let alone 500gb or 512gb. DDR4 RAM is getting cheaper, as I'd DDR5 RAM. The fact Apple keeps acting like these two things are some sort of rare commodity is sickening.

Well on paper, yes, but this isn't even remotely true. Windows laptops sound like airplanes trying to take off for the most part, and if you actually get a comparable, very slim notebook, it isn't even close. You would need to plug in the windows laptop for its peak performance to surpass the efficiency of mac silicon. Additionally, the battery life on windows laptops in this same market of slim notebooks is just horrible. I thought we were over this idea of looking at specs on paper almost like 5 years ago, but i guess not.
Now, the aspect of pricing is totally true, but this is typical Apple. If people continue to buying why change their strategy? This product forces you to buy the base model and be fine with worse drive speeds even though it still isn't horrible or factor in forking out a lot more money for a m1 pro, because an upgraded m2 air gets pretty damn close to those prices. That is an issue, but sorry as someone who owns a windows laptop, m1 air, and a decked-out gaming PC. For most laptop users, m1 air and m2 air can easily beat their competition within its class.
