Ok Bud. I'm typing this from my work's M1 Pro 16 and have a 13 M1 MBP

MacOS certainly has plenty of quirks, and while the M1 is a good processor, without a hibernate mode, I find my 13 MBP actually lasting less than my prior Windows laptop -- given I only use it an hour or two per day. My Windows laptop would hibernate and I'd come back a day or two later and I'd still have almost the same battery life remaining, meanwhile my Macbook has drained 15-20%.

Some people are married to the Apple ecosystem, and that's fine. But in 2022, charging $1300 for a computer with 8/256 is a complete ripoff. That's where my issue lies. The original M1 Air was a good deal when on sale. But the higher end models, and/or any upgraded RAM/Storage get into the realm of F-U pricing.

For day-to-day usage, something like this below would be more than enough for 95% of people. More RAM, more storage.

And for those who want a 16", this would be solid at a fraction of the price of the 16MBP.

This is very interesting. I have a pretty new Dell Latitude work desktop (got it new 2 months ago) and I think the laptop and Windows on it suck big time.
There is no such thing as a sleep mode on the PC: the machine will turn the fans to high and drain the battery within hours, even if I close browser and other windows.
Granted, my IT department may run some funky software in the background, however I couldn't identify it.
On the other hand, my 2016 MBP will keep its battery for weeks in sleep mode (after simply closing the lid) and it will come back instantly when I open the lid.
They feel like from different universes.
Also, my 2016 MBP can run circles around the brand new windows machine when it comes to usual daily tasks, such as browsing web (granted the Dell is with a somewhat modest i5, 11th gen, 2.6 Ghz, 16 GB of RAM, however the MBP also has 16 GB of ram and a 6 year old intel i7)

IMHO you (and few others here) don't know enough about the Mac internals, architecture and OS, so you just compare "specs".
16 GB on a Windows machine mean nothing when compared to a Mac. Quality, performance and optimization are the attributes that you are likely missing.
I'm no IT guy but I know that M1 and M2 are a game changer and they even use the ram differently, to a point where for most users, the amount of ram isn't very important due to almost instant swap and access to SSD and CPU.
If you are a professional, the cost of the upgrades on a Mac will be worth it and not a problem for you.
Otherwise you probably don't need those upgrades.
Pretty much wrong on all counts. I *am* an IT person (over 30 years) who mostly uses/manages/sells Windows-based machines, but also have clients who are all Mac-based so I own Windows desktops, laptops and 2 MacBook Pro's (a 14" M1 Pro and a 16" M1 Pro) and had a M1 Mac Mini and yes, I do look at specs. You're shooting in the dark if you don't.

I will be completely honest in saying that while using my MacBook or Dell XPS laptop, I don't notice that one is any better (performance-wise) than the other. They run different OS's but the MacBook definitely isn't night/day better than the Dell or vice versa.

With regards to minimal RAM and swap to SSD, we'll see how the SSD wear is on that Mac SSD in a few years vs a system with 16/32GB RAM, where swap to disk is minimal. And while SSD is fast, RAM is magnitudes faster.

Having the flexibility to upgrade RAM or SSD is great. Buy small, pay less to upgrade yourself compared to giving Apple 10X more money for the same thing and having it fixed in there for life.

not retina? what year is this

also lol at your macbook pro apparently losing 15-20% while its asleep, you have a crypto mining virus on a mac (somehow.) if you leave a m1 mbp open with the screen on and turned off sleep altogether it wouldnt even lose 20% in 24 hours, thats how efficient they are.
So you're saying a MBP has 5 days runtime on the battery? That's the funniest thing I've read here today! LMAO

The SSD on the M2 base model is 50% slower than that of the M1, so the SSD swap the Mac depends on to offset the low memory is worse on the M2. If you're getting the M2 you'll need to upgrade either the SSD or the RAM to get the same type of performance as the M1 when it comes to memory and swap. That's already $400 more than what the M1 costs. Forget about Mac vs. PC argument - it's not even clear cut that the M2 models are even worth the premium over M1.

Your IT department either gave you a defective laptop or has it misconfigured.

There are three modes in Windows for non-use -- Hibernate, Sleep and Off. Sleep uses the most battery (but not much), whereas Hibernate uses next-to-none as your RAM is saved to disk when it enters hibernate mode. Off, of course is Off (except in Mac Land where Off doesn't exist).

I close my laptops all the time and the battery lasts days. The fact your fans are running high speed is a hint something is not right. I've seen IT departments load up computers with so much spying/security/management software that the CPU is constantly above 25%.

Your single experience with a particular Dell Latitude from your IT department is not representative of all Windows laptops.

New reviews show m2 may have a thermal problem and could get very hot. Air does not come with fans...
As long as you know those "new reviews" are clickbait. These days for money and clicks people and media companies will do anything.

I know they don't do touchscreens on laptops. That's one of the main reasons I don't have a Mac. It's stupid. It's not like Apple is against touchscreens on phones and tablets.

And their chips do not blow away everything else. They're highly optimized for certain tasks for which they're great, but they fall behind in other tasks. At least they can virtualize now.
The day Apple incorporates touch screen into their Macs, it will be labeled the "MacBook Pro Plus Max Touch with Touchbbar" and will be called the revolution of notebook computing, carrying an equally revolutionary price starting at $2,999.

Cancelled my order on a top spec'd MBA M2 after realizing Apple is still using an LCD in these and not the new MiniLED screens they have in the MBP M1 Pro and Max models.

Waiting on the MacBook Pro M2. Macbook Air is good for students and seniors but not serious users.
They are in stock now, I just picked mine up about a week ago.

How is M2 Air different from M1 Pro? I couldn't find the comparison anywhere. I appreciate your suggestions. I know the prices are similar.

In general, worse in every aspect, except weight and a slight advantage in single core performance.

M1 Pro Macbook Pros has better multi-core performance, Mini LED screens, built in HDMI/SD card reader, a faster SSD, etc.

There is already plenty of research showing that the 8gb m2 systems are horrible. If you insist on only 8gb, get a m1 - it's actually faster (by quite a bit) when under load.

Apple honestly should not have released the 8gb m2 system the way it is.
