Desktop Drives vs. WD Red™ Plus
Do right by your NAS and choose the drive purpose-built for NAS with an array of features to help preserve your data and maintain optimum performance. Take the following into consideration when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:
• Compatibility: Unlike desktop drives, these 3.5” HDDs are specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimum performance.
• Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one, and desktop drives aren’t typically designed and tested under those conditions like WD Red™ Plus drives are.
• Error Recovery Controls: WD Red™ Plus NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within the NAS system.
• Noise and Vibration Protection: Designed to operate solo, desktop drives typically offer little or no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red™ Plus drives are designed to thrive in multi-bay NAS system environments.

For anyone looking to build a NAS, I'd recommend buying *used* HGST Ultrastar He8 drives on Amazon. They are 8gb for $106 ($13.25/GB). They come with a 5 year warranty, which beats the warranty on this WD drive by 2 years, and you are getting a legit enterprise level 7,200 rpm beast of a drive. The ones I have gotten came with anywhere from 3-5 years of up time on them already (but only powered off like 15 times), but that's a drop in the bucket for these enterprise drives. People say they are a bit louder than WD Red drives, but I haven't noticed it even though my server is in my living room. At the end of the day, all hard drives are at risk of failure, but a 5 year warranty shows how serious these drives are, especially when WD will only warranty a new drive for 3 years. I don't really see the downside (of course I run my drives in matched/mirrored pairs, so I'm not really afraid of a drive failure either way, but these are a great value).
Excellent deal for a branded drive built for NAS. No shucking req'd or compromised warranty. If I had not stocked up on 14TB EasyStores during the Best Buy deal around BF ($170 after discount), would be all over this.

I think there's a reasonable chance you see a drive in the 14-18 range at a better per TB cost, but unless someone has the inside track, I don't think anyone here can give you a definitive answer.

$15/TB is best price that I have seen for a branded NAS drive with full 3 year warranty. Yes, you may find a lower price per TB but it is almost certain to be a shucked drive which also means you are now playing HD roulette because there is no guarantee what drive you are going to receive in an external enclosure. I wouldn't hesitate on this deal if 12TB drives fits your needs. I don't see any downside...except for perhaps buying from Newegg but that's it.

According to Newegg it's WD120EFBX drive. A little google searching shows CMR, 7200rpm, and not helium filled.
My 2 cents is that these are fine in most home NAS/builds, but could run a little warmer since there's no Helium and spins faster, but as always YMMV. Excellent deal for a Red/Red Plus.
Oh and it's a little sweeter if you check out using Paypal set up with Discover. 5% Category this quarter.

Better deals might not be up for long, but there are better deals that have shipped from Amazon posted here.
Yes, they are very rare.
