It's like... If Baldur's gate was a detective game set in an alternate reality French colony... And you play an alcoholic... and on top of all that, they game was made by people with different cultural sensibilities than Americans so everything about the world is off. All of this in a good way though for what little sense that makes.

Just buy it. It's cheap and amazing. It's worth full price.
More storytime less racking up kills vs Fallout. Although you could go pacifist in Fallout 1.
Diablo doesn't seem like a good comparison given it's a kill and advance dungeon crawl.
1. This is a text-heavy game. The writing is phenomenal and there is narration in the Final Cut, but I still found myself reading every piece of background which makes parts of the game a little bit of a smog IMHO.
2. Outcomes of actions in the game are based on probabilities given your character's set of skills. Some checks will be easy if you are proficient in the underlying skill, and for those checks that call upon skills you are weak in you will have a higher probability of failure. And you are likely going to fail. A lot. But that's the way the game was meant to be played, and it took me some time to just enjoy the ride and not try to be perfect.
At $15 I cannot recommend this game enough. I hope some of y'all check it out.
