To think you used to be able to build an entire PC with monitor and peripherals for $1200.

$1099 or thereabouts, caused by several factors:

1. china tariffs enacted by the trump administration (i'm not being political, but it was a 25% tariff) increased prices
2. people auto-buying them to mine for crypto increased demand
3. scalpers reselling them to resell reduced supply

the reason why they are no longer $1099

1. the GPU tariff has been lifted
2. crypto has crashed
3. they made more than the scalpers want to purchase and the new cards are on the way too

Back on topic, the 3090 is below MSRP, but it has been enough time to say it should be. Take that what you will, make an informed decision and have a good one.

I'd say that original MSRP was BS to begin with. No way that card was worth more than 2x the 3080. I think 1K should have been the original MSRP

the 4000 series is also rumored to come out sometime late this year. If you've waited this long for a video card what's a couple more months? At worse you may see better discounts on 3000 series cards.

you can easily do that today, but it won't have a 3090 in it.

And further on topic -
- this card requires a PSU in excess of 750 watts. The highest you can go with a 750W is the 3080, IIRC.
- 4000 series will likely all require in excess of 750W at the 4070 level and above, at least that's what preliminary reports are guessing.
- one should not expect ginormous jumps. usually the 3070 becomes the 4060, 3080 becomes the 4070, etc. sometimes the jump is bigger but even so it's not on the level of say 4060 is as good as 3080.
- yesterday 3080 was available for 730
- I am not sure why all of these are Gigabyte cards. There are some reports of poor support/reliability, but mostly hearsay.

So, that said, my guess is that this card will be comparable to the 4080 when it comes out. I do not expect a huge generational jump given the lack of hype, high power requirements, no expected change in die size, and just general state of gaming right now - there's no real impetus. if you look at the list of RT capable games it's still quite small. I would expect the 4080 to be street priced at about $1000 when it first comes out, but with much less VRAM - although one wonders what you really need 24GB of VRAM for.

Nvidia has to deal with a surplus of current chips that they pre-ordered for fabbing (before the mining "crash"), before they will release the 4000 series GPU.
The 3000 series GPU will continue to drop even faster in the next couple of months.

I upgraded my 600W PSU to a 750W just to accommodate my 3080, I'll not be upgrading my PSU again if the 4080 is going to require a higher PSU requirement than that, it's getting ridiculous at this point.

As per WCCFTech [wccftech.com], power limits are the following:

AD102 - 800W Max Power Limit
AD103 - 450W Max Power Limit
AD104 - 400W Max Power Limit
AD106 - 260W Max Power Limit

I would venture to say the power limit on 4070 will be 450W, not 750W+

"one should not expect ginormous jumps." This is not the current line of thought from those familiar with the industry, the next generation is rumored to be roughly 2x as fast as the current generation. In this [wccftech.com] article, it is stated that 3090 Ti has 40 TFLOPS compute power, where 4090 Ti is projected to have 100 TFLOPS compute power.

The most similar comparison between recent generations would be the 900 series to the 1000 series, where the 980 Ti had 5.6 TFLOPS of compute power, the 1080 Ti had 10.1 TFLOPS. Note that the jump from 980 Ti to 1080 Ti was about 80% improvement, and the rumored projected increase from 3090 Ti to 4090 Ti will be 150%.

I would say that unless you have a 4k display you really have no business with anything that requires more than 750w PSU. I don't have one, but as I understand it the 3080 already is able to max out all settings with 144fps avg on 1440p, ray tracing on.

Great 'below MSRP' find! We should all 'hold-the-line', tho...

"They" want to delay releasing new video cards because there's too many older stock, like this GTX 3090. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

The only people hurt by the industry are us gamers. Wait to the absolute last moment to buy your card, forcing "them" to keep lowering the price of these "older" cards. Mad

"They" can always release their new cards out NOW if they want more money... (thus, pushing the price of existing cards lower).
