If I just want to backup photos and stream & watch in my phone the phone videos I took, is this a future proof option? Or is the processor and memory lacking for photo back & viewing

"Designed for home and personal users who need to store and share photos, videos, ..."

If this suits your needs today it will likely meet those needs for the next 3-4 years at least. Don't expect to perform video transcoding on this - you will just be able to reliably stream video in whatever format it is stored.

Should be totally fine for that. I bought the DS215J (so the 2015 model) - and it's been bulletproof ever since. It does a daily backup of my machine, I've used it for security system monitoring, and we regularly use it for streaming movies/content. The available packages that you can install through synology is insane as well. 100% recommend it.

I have this currently with 2x14tb for all my docs, but primarily got it for backing up thousands of DSLR photo/video and cell phone photo/video. I've used their app on my iphone and I haven't noticed any slowness on wifi, so the synology is fine. The only problem has been my slow 5g speeds.

I'm looking for a robust way to sync up my iPhone photos to (somewhere not the same iPhone or iCloud), how do you like the Synology iPhone app that syncs photos to it? I assume it 'works from anywhere without a VPN' ?

Have used one of these for my home NAS for 2 years. I have 2 WD 10TB drives in it. Use it to back up all my home, and buisness computers used bye and my wife, as well as our phones. I also use it as a Plex server. Works great for both. Video playback is great streaming Plex to Roku. The physical upload/download to a to/from another drive is uber slow. There seem to be a lot of other apps that are proprietary to Synology that I have no dug into. Also they have regular updates to the OS and apps. Very good communication from the company.

Thank you. I won't access this from outside anyway so it will be only viewing when connected to home Wi-Fi

As long as you just stream and don't need it to transcode, for that it's underpowered. I have two and they work well for basic NAS storage. One stores files for Plex server on a NUC and the other holds FLAC files for receiver.

It's so slow. Every click takes 20 sec to respond. I just upgraded to the 220+. Got to sell this one

Anyone with an ounce of tech knowledge knows the user above me is incompetent. Either the machine is fault, the harddrives are faulty or the system accessing the NAS is faulty; Either way that guy doesn't realize 20 seconds is obviously a sign on something failing from how the machine should be running.

P.S... never listen to people who say hyperbolic statements like that - if they can exaggerate and blow out their experience to such a degree then what else can you not trust them with?

Yes, I believe there is a Synology app that can manage and sync your photos.

How's this compare to the DS220+ model that's also on sale for $240? I ordered the other one yesterday and wondering if I should return it for this. My main purpose is just to backup video/photos from iOS devices wirelessly.

NVM: found this comparison https://www.windowscentral.com/sy...-vs-ds220j

I have one of these that I use just for Surveillance Station. I have it recording the RTSP feed from 4 cameras and never have any issues.
