Good bundle for someone who doesn't have big storage requirements. WD RED are my personal drive of choice for NAS. Something to keep in mind for the uninitiated: The 16 terabyte storage listed is the raw storage capacity of the drives. You will not get 16tb actual usable storage. With standard RAID config, it will probably be about 10TB real-world storage.

Synology fan- I've deployed dozens of these things. Be sure to always get the models with the + at the end. These give you better support and they'll do priority shipping warranty swaps if something goes wrong.

Setup and config can be done using a browser window so OS doesn't matter.

Should be 12 TB with Shr-1. https://www.synology.com/en-us/su...0TB|4%20TB
Again, real world capacity doesn't match raw drive capacity, nor what the storage calculator says. That calculator is a general guide and not precisely accurate.

So I'm new to NAS and just bought the 4-bay DS920+ without the disks.

I'm considering the deal from NewEgg for 12TB disks. Would 3 HDs be enough to build my NAS or should I buy 4 right now?

3 would be enough. Actually, 1 would be sufficient if you don't want any protection (RAID). You can add additional drives later on if you'd like.

It seems like tech is starting to slide down in pricing, so IMO, get what you need for now.

Personally, I think the 12TB for $180/drive is a fantastic deal, so I'd get them now if you can.

One of the nice things about using SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) is you have flexibility in you can mix and match drive sizes. You could do 12x2 now, and then when 14/16TB come down in price, add them, later. The Synology RAID calculator can give you an idea.

Three is just enough to provide data protection (a must with a NAS, IMO). Four gives better performance and the possibility of doing double drive failure protection.

For those of you with experience with Synology, is SHR the way to go? I know it depends a lot on usage and requirements, but for a general home backup solution that doesn't require high availability, would SHR with 2 drives (initially) provide basic protection and flexibility moving forward? Every time I start looking at these I get hung up on which RAID config I need and thus how many drives I have to have.

I always use SHR when it's available (some of the higher models don't do it, believe it or not, just standard RAID types). I go with it because my understanding is that it's the most flexible RAID format on Synology.

Yes two drives is fine for modest needs. Rule of thumb: the more drives you have, the better the performance.
