Part of that could be brand collaborations and/or larger sets in general/more pieces per set.

I've seen studies that show that the price per brick hasn't actually changed that much over the years. Apparently one of the main reasons people think this is because they didn't buy their own legos when they were kids, but when they become adults and buy them for their own kids they're surprised at how expensive they are. Plus, sets in the past tended to be a lot smaller and there weren't that many 1000+ piece sets like this.

If you look at really old sets, they are definitely more basic and didn't have near as many bricks or variety of pieces. Even the ones that aren't super old (but still old) are more basic. I bought some of the original Harry Potter sets and comparing them to the ones that come out now, they are pretty different.
One thing about Lego is the resale value is high and there's not many toys that are like that (esp. used). I have never sold any of our collection, but everything we have that is retired is worth significantly more than what I paid especially ones like LOTR & Hobbit, Scooby Doo, Star Wars, etc.
My kid has been Lego obsessed since around age 3. nod There are several sets I passed up that I wish I didn't b/c they are crazy expensive now like the Ewok Village.

Lego announced a price increase in current sets happening in August (some, not all, and it's as high as 30% I think? on some of them so I went ahead and purchased the ones we want on the list I saw).

Nope, just wondered the same thing a while back. I will say that I have a Hobbit set that I found on SD for $25 a long time ago that has been sitting unopened in my storage room for years that I just sold a couple of weeks ago for $100. Lego can be a pretty decent investment.
