PS+ Extra and PS+ Premium are like Netflix. You only have access to play while subscribed and the games available rotate in and out.

PS+ Essential games are claimed for life, but only playable while you are a current PS+ subscriber. So if you cancel, you lose access. If you later resume your subscription, you will be able to play claimed games again. If you miss claiming a game in a month, you miss out on that game forever (unless they someday repeat it).

With so many games to play, it becomes equally important to keep track of which games are leaving and when so you can prioritize those first.
