FWIW, if you are looking for this all in one, Amazon also appears to have the 50th Anniversary Edition on sale for $46 (from $99). Personally I have been waiting for this version to go on sale for a long time now, and was glad I checked both. Hope this helps someone else!

Was excited, but reviews point out that illustrations are few and far between, and quality of print/paper/etc is poor. As always take with a grain of salt, but it turned me off ;/.

I'll send you further down the rabbit hole.

Here are some of the good LOTR versions, in no particular order:

1. *One volume Alan Lee illustrated edition.*

2. *Three volume 60th anniversary edition*

These use the corrected text, and have the closest covers to Tolkien's design. They also have a bunch of other stuff as he wanted it, like red ring text and book of mazarbul facsimiles. If you get the box set you'll also get the reader's companion.

Oh yeah did your 50th come with pictures? Well my illustrated did! I can't read nuttin with out me some pictures. I got me the superior version this book rules them all!

It is to be expected. There are much higher quality editions to be had (I can provide links if needed) at significantly higher price points, these are basically the mass market paperback deluxe editions. I wouldn't consider myself a collector, just a hobbyist, but I have a small library of Tolkien's works valued in the thousands (not tens of thousands, though I know those who do).
