This 88 dollar PC is not a powerful PC. That is correct. I'm not being duped into thinking this is a POWERFUL PC!
This is a laptop PC who's motherboard has been placed in a tiny tower case and can run windows 10/11, and you can add more ram, and comes with NVMe, with external power supply that laptop's use! So very, very low power 24/7 machine 6 watts idle.
It has bluetooth/wifi,ethernet port, 4 usb 2 ports, 2 usb 3 ports. 2 year warranty, intel 600 internal graphics, hdmi and vga port,

You know that Walmart currently is selling this at 299 dollars with good user review average.

I object to the word "duped" in your post. There are 2-3 threads on this device on slickdeals , with things people are doing with it.

Like the Raspberry Pi, it is hobby device, and cheaper than Pi,( if you were to buy Pi plus all the extra's you need to buy to complete Pi package).

Hopefully, people read YOUR post, and read posts from others that discuss the positive aspect of this device, so they know what they are buying and not buying. Alert heard, sir. . Your mission is accomplished. Torpedoes away. Next target!

For those of you wanting to use this thing as a NAS, you're looking at three issues:

Where to mount the disks? As previously mentioned, there's space for a 3.5" disk and a 2.5" disk if you removed the optical drive. Alternatively, you could remove the entire cage and replace it with something that'd accept two 3.5" disks [amazon.com] (I haven't actually tried it because I haven't received the computer yet, but it should work). Similarly, it should not be too difficult to put four 2.5" disks in the case. Use a cage if you want to be fancy. Velcro or duct tape if you just don't gaf. Or get a bigger case, but then you'd lose the cute little form factor.

Where to get the power? Y-splitters. Just don't overload the power supply.

Where to connect the data cables? Ah, now this is the fun part. See previous post regarding the limitations of the PCIe bus. If the goal is to install as many disks as possible, one way would be to put SATA controllers in the ×16, ×4, and ×2 slots. Yes, the M-keyed M.2 slot and even the E-keyed M.2 slot could probably be used for PCIe modules, including SATA controllers and Ethernet controllers.

Each lane of PCIe 2.0 provides 500 MB/s of bandwidth, just barely sufficient for SATA III's 600 MB/s. This is obviously not a problem for HDD, but could limit SSD performance. You might want to be... creative... with port selection, if you plan to use SSDs and HDDs together. For example, if you put a 2-port SATA controller in the ×2 slot, you might want to pair an SSD with a HDD on that same controller to optimize bandwidth usage.

Also remember the limitations of the DMI link. If you're using this machine as a NAS, your disks might be sharing PCIe bandwidth with your NIC. You could potentially install many disks and a lot of other stuff, but they'd compete for bandwidth. Proceed with caution.

I found a youtube video showing someone striping out of the motherboard from an Acer Apsire and putting it into a miniITX case [youtube.com]. I believe the motherboard factor is likely mini ITX. Now I am on the hunt for a nice case to relocate the system into.
Looking at the 4 screw holes will give you perspective on if it will fit or not. In that video his motherboard is same height as ours but his is the same width as Mini-ITX, thats why it fit that case. Ours is both taller and wider than Mini-ITX. I hope your case hunting goes well.

Correction....looking at the video in full screen there may have been a little room width wise and so it might have fit.

Can't be changed. It is soldered into the motherboard.

Trying to figure out how to enable device encryption. Does not seem to be available. Without this, anyone could pop the hard drive into a different system and read everything right? Does veracrpt work with windows 11?
Full disk encryption could be easily achieved on Linux using dm-crypt, and I believe BitLocker provides similar functionality on Windows 10 Pro [microsoft.com]. The J4125 supports AES-NI. If you're using the preinstalled Windows 10 Home, you'd have to look elsewhere...

Upgraded to 🪟 11, but device encryption not available. Not sure if veracrpt works with 11.

I'm like you at times. And then when I relax and take the time to center myself, then I just focus on buying stuff that is right for me, and allow people to buy stuff that feels right to them. I bought tons of stuff that turned out NOT as I thought it would be. ... and in a few years it all goes into the landfill, one way or another. Be nice! And hopefully more people will be nice to you, as they carry you to the land fill (and put a marker on your grave.
Perspective!
If this was a good deal, I would be screaming how it's a good deal. It's really not, but if people want to believe it's a good deal, then I'm not trying to stop them from spending their hard earned money on it. The problem is when you share your opinion, and people can't handle that your opinion is different than theirs. You're going to spend more to update this to make it something decent than you would spend on a new item that works good out of the box. Throw in that it has a very short warranty, and it makes the deal even worse. A lot of times "refurbished" doesn't mean "like new." It just means they went through it and got it working, Consider they're willing to ship these for free They're not going to spend money replacing components on refurbs, then pay to ship it you, just so they can lose money. But hey,if you get this, then I hope yo enjoy it. Smilie

I don't really get this. You have obviously shared your opinion many times and believing this not to be a hot deal. Many others that frequent this topic obviously don't share the same opinion. Isn't your action in fact trying to convince others to see the way you see the world? Considering this is listed as a frontpage deals, have over 200 comments from both threads, and have sold over 1300 on eBay, it is obvious many folks don't agree with you. Why not just move on and let those enjoy this purchase discuss in peace.

Look at it this way, I don't feel buying lottery (purely because I have a PhD in science and don't believe in those odds) is a good spend of money but I don't go around and convincing people to stop. To each of their own. These are obviously not the droids you are looking for, move along.

I need a cheap, basic computer almost exclusively for printing FedEx labels at at work station for an employee. I assume this would be fine, right, even with the lackluster CPU?

It should be excellent, more than needed.

This J4125 is similar in performance to Intel's standard i3 chips from 2016-2018, except, the J4125 will have better graphics/video performance. It will be fine for your purpose.

This 88 dollars laptop transformed PC has good uses for some of us.
Major reason for me is I do have a few chromebooks , and I don't feel like destroying them keeping them plugged into charger 24/7 to do simple things at home (degrading the built-in battery).
Since there is NO BATTERY in this 88 device, and uses super low electricity, always on device, with windows 11 on it , it works for me.
Also, with chromebooks they are very limited withe emm soldered ram and storage. With this 88 dollar device I can add NVMe for OS and data storage, and up to 16gb ddr 4 ram. And add SSD and other things that I couldn't do in chromebook.

Also, I have option of chromeosflex on usb3 stick to dual boot and keeping windows 11 clean.

Ok let's try this.. I'm going to spend about $35 shipped (tax included) on a decent budget video card for this machine (with 2gb ddr5 memory). I happen to have an extra 8gb sodimm from upgrading my laptop (a fairly common occurrence so we can actually propose this is a likely scenario for many potential buyers). With tax that will bring my total cost to around 135$ for a 12gb quad core system with video capability adequate to play GTA5, and I think it will be able to play Battlefield 1 on low settings.
In short, show me the deal where I can get anything near that capability for near that price. If you'd like to include the cost of the 8b stick, that's approx $25 and would bring it to $160. Please also address this price point separately.
It is important to consider what people have lying around collecting dust when we are considering a computer that ships with empty slots..
Also, I think it's valuable to take a look at the parts value.. In theory you can sell the ssd and boot this thing from USB/network, right? So it is actually still a functioning machine.. What happens to the sub $100 tax included price tag after you've sold the ssd?

The truth is your comments ARE opinion.. If we discuss facts (anecdotal circumstances of use case for the machine, and actual market value of included components, and actual market price of comparable equipment).. your argument deflates, and is exposed as consumer-crazed hyper opinionated bloviating.

Truth hurts buddy, that's how we learn. Take it or leave it.

Go buy it and play BF1 then. You're right, these are opinions. I have mine and wouldn't buy it. If you want to grab it and play BF1 on it, then you're your right to do so. However, that's not going to change that I think it's a bad deal. A Celeron is a budget CPU. They're fine for things like word processing or watching a video in 720p. If you try to multitask with them, their performance tapers down significantly. Throw in that it's a refurb with a very short warranty and it's even easier to pass up You may get a good one, but refurb PCs are notorious for not being restored properly. They get them in good enough condition to at least work, they throw them back in a box.
