I've been out of high school for over 20 years and they're still using this same calculator and it's at the same price. Hopefully the bootleg calculator games have improved since then to help pass the time in Calculus class. I learned more real world skills playing Drug Wars on my beloved square body TI calculator.

I teach AP Calculus. If you can snag a college discount, it's worth it to get this calculator. You can't use a phone on an AP test, and though any graphing calculator will work, the multi color format and the faster processor make it worth the money. They're also pretty much indestructible.

Finally, you can sell it for around $80 when you're done with it.

With inflation, the calculator is less expensive than it used to be. $100 in 1997 is about $187 now. /Not saying the near monopoly is good.

Should go watch the LTT video where they overclock a TI calculator.

The TI racket is wild.
Manufacturer cost on this thing is probably under a dollar at this point. The packaging probably costs more to make than the calculator.
I graduated from High School in 1995, and I still have my TI-83, which even back then I thought was a ripoff. 27 years later, and the prices are still the same and the only difference is a color screen. There are toys at Five Below with color screens in them.

Why the hell can't we just make a TI-84 app at this point? Hell, charge $25 bucks for it. An iPhone Max is just about the same real estate. And with a landscape view, you can easily see graphs.

Toss these old plastic squares in the bin.

I took more than 4 calculus classes.
Not once I felt the benefit of having this calculator.
I borrowed it for my first calculus class, and by mid semester, I returned it to the owner.

Grad HS in 92 in Israel and they were just coming out with monochrome graphic calculators but never got a chance to use one. Right after I Did 4 years of college in US and still never needed one. If I remember correctly there were couple of games on it. Back then it was revolutionary. Nostalgia

As an OLD and Active College student, most classes do not allow TI-89. Why no clue they just say no.
The computer algebra system, that it automatically factors equations, it has differentiation and integration functions built in. The original TI-84 was a toaster in comparison to the 89. My college calculus professor was smart enough to know this and told me I could use it, but if I didn't show my work then I didn't get credit for a correct answer.

Well you almost certainly can't use your phone as a calculator on exams. I have a TI-84 and found that going to college on a TI-89 would be better. But this one is colorful and cool, it's the hip option
As an engineering student, the fact that the 89 will simplify big, ugly formulas-on-top-of-formulas into their simplest form alone was an enormous timesaver. I don't think the 84 can do that, but that's ridiculously helpful. Yes, you can do it by hand, but it's just so much easier to skip those steps.

Someone was just mentioning graphing calculators on the radio recently and how they couldn't stand using them and that made me remember having them and yet I can't even remember actually ever doing anything on one. lol. I guess I did and forgot. i dunno.

I always used to love math and yet couldn't stand calculus. Frown In fact my degree would be a different one if not for the fact that i was going to have to do calculus 2 and 3, differential equations, engineering physics 2, and then 4 classes in my major that had calculus built into them. like anyone really needs that much of it when on an everyday basis they'd be using computers that take care of it...

Really what matters is what their margins are. The tech, screen, chip etc should be far cheaper to produce now than it was 20 years ago.
