Amazon on the other hand is a notorious offender.

....and it's also a good idea to mark it as a gift, that way you'll know for sure it will be put in an Amazon box.

Target ships without the packaging? I figured it would be Amazon since it's the "Frustration Free" option?

Does Amazon put this in an Amazon box if you select "This item is a gift" at checkout?

Note that Target has quite a few sets for 20% off right now. Amazon must be matching them.

it means they don't put it in an amazon box, the set comes in it's native box, presumably all banged up because there's nothing to protect it during transit. for collectors, it's frustrating.

Amazon on the other hand is a notorious offender.
And the only two I have ordered from Target with the "Ships in original packaging" notation shipped in the retail packaging. Target doesn't care about collectors or pristine boxes for gifts.

Frustration free packaging from Amazon (for Lego) almost always is shipped with the retail box in the factory-shipped packaging from Lego (as shown in the YouTube video link shared by another Slickdealer).

There are always exceptions to each rule but this appears to be the most common experience. You've been warned.
