It's more of a bait than an act of desperation on their part. I never got the 25 back last time I bought a similar offer, don't think it was Groupon though. Their customer service is pathetic, and I finally gave up after chasing it for a while.

I had the opposite happen. Bought a membership with the pay $45, get $45 off purchase offer and used $25 back AmEx offer. $45 came off of my first purchase and I made $25. I get a new membership every year with these deals but this latest one was the best (for me)

Okay, to be more specific. I bought a couple of trash cans online, and joined the plus membership as well in the same order. Two weeks later, luckily, all of sudden, I was like, I thought I bought something from Sam's club, so I checked, it still showed "on the way". But then I checked the tracking information, it stopped at label created. So that I contacted online chat, someone told me not to worry, they would do their best to take care of me, in 72 hours. Three days later, nothing happened. I called them up, they told me the trash cans were out of stock, they cancelled my order, but wouldn't cancel my plus membership. I had to talk to the supervisor to cancel my plus membership. Simply the worst customer service!

Curious too. My second year just expired. I signed up as new customer the 2nd time around and ofcourse used my name same but different email and different debit card. I guess I didn't qualify for the gift card. Anyone here can shed some light on how we are a "New customer?" I think I'm having my son purchase it under his name and card this time....

Note: Plus membership also on sale. They haven't done that in 2 or 3 years I think? You can earn cash back, enable curbside pickup & free shipping and get in the store earlier. But you do have the choice to upgrade your account pro-rated at any time if you so choose. I sometimes upgrade to Plus in the last remaining months when it gets cheaper.

Speaking of Costco (which I also like), they won't do free shipping unless the order is at least $75 (with higher online prices). Sams is flat $4 shipping I think? Valid point.

I did a chat and they confirmed that my 1st purchase would have instant savings. I did this a few months ago when it was $45 off 1st in club purchase.
